I had health insurance, I had auto insurance at the time of my car accident, being that it was someone else's fault I truly believed I would be okay, I wouldn't have any problems getting taken care of. Boy that was a wrong thought. See Colorado in 2003 changed the auto insurance laws and hospitals don't have to take you if there is a 3rd party insurance involved, they can do a medical lien or charge your insurance. If you don't have Med Pay on your auto insurance get it that is my first advice.
At the hospital I was in and out of in less than an hour told me I was bruised and battered, they gave me some Vicaden sent me home. A week later my arm was very sore and my back made it hard to walk. I would learn that afternoon that my arm had actually been refractured, it would take ten days and a lawyer before I was able to have surgery. My back took two years to get proper treatment.
I was denied for surgery, if it wasn't for my current doctor I would not of had my surgery. In April 2009 I had my surgery, because of the time between the accident and the surgery date my back had deteriorated to the point where my hip and rib touched on the right side, my back had discoloration and the pain made it so I wasn't able to work. I couldn't manage my own bladder anymore. What many of my friends and family don't know is there were times when I was working that I didn't make it to the bathroom, I had a change of clothes in my car that would keep my secret from others.
At 40 I walked with a cane. I would go home and crawl into bed. Crying some nights not knowing if I'd ever feel normal. Nights without sleep. No one not even my attorney really cared.
I get angry at all this healthcare debate. I get angry at people who don't know what denial is and it's not a river in egypt! It's when you are at a point where you think you can depend on all these insurances and it turns out there's more red tape than there is green! When hospitals turn you away or do the minimum they have to to get you out the door, this isn't care it's business. We are a $$$ to the insurance companies and hospitals. We aren't cared for.
See once they sent me home it was no longer an emergency!
My health insurance kicked in after a year, they said they'd approve. Surgery was set for April 1st. I was so pleased that I was on my way to getting fixed. Nope DENIAL. My insurance company claimed my back was not severe enough. This is so hard to deal with your in pain, your broke, your not bringing income in, yet some doctor who doesn't practice but gets paid by the insurance company denied me. My doctors took it to the next level and fought the denial. 3 weeks later I had my approval.
You'd think I'd be pleased and it all worked out. Well I had my surgery. But insurance is a funny thing they pick and choose what they will and won't pay. I still owe $70,000 to the hospital, because the insurance company only approved 4 days hospital stay and I was in a week because I got ill. I also had unapproved tests done. The tests were done because I was getting sick and it was green! The hospital cared. The doctors at this hospital helped me realize insurance companies are a hassle we could do without.
My insurance company also only approved 8 physical therapy appointments! 8 for someone with 14 fused vertebrae! Than because disability took so long for an approval I didn't have the money necessary to pay my cobra so now I am without insurance and uninsurable. Where does this put me?
Dependent on a broken system? Who's going to hire me? I have good days and bad. I sometimes feel like a million bees have stung my back. I am given drugs that's an easy answer. But see now I have to pay cash for the drugs, I have to go through a system to get medical care. I don't get the proper treatment.
I am required to pay the doctor who was on medical probation who originally sent me home. I am expected to pay the other doctors office who only provided pain management in the form of pills. The same doctor who read the same Mri as my current doctor who tells me the Mri shows significant damage and was enough for him to recommend the surgery. I am expected to pay three hospitals. ONe sent me home, One looked at my arm told me it was broke and told me to wait for my doctor to return! One hospital fixed the arm and the solution for my broken back was a cane!
Invest in a pre-legal plan, seek attorneys advice. Well my attorney made $30,000 off of my $100,000 settlement. NO here in Colorado there's no big settlement, no millions, unless you sue the person outright. Now I chose not to because I know the young lady who we had the accident with. She simply lost control on ice. She wasn't drinking, she wasn't driving too fast it was the conditions of the road.
You can have all the advise you want for us but you haven't been here. Attorneys don't work for free. I have searched high and low. They say they do until the settlement is reached. I paid $30000 for an attorney who advised me to wait until the hospital takes me to court for their charges and than I can get a court appointed attorney to fight my case for me. There you go my free attorney.
My credit which was finally getting to normal after a divorce is ruined. I am disabled. I only can tell you until you walk this long journey I have you cannot say what i should or shouldn't have done, you can shout out all the advise you want but you don't know what it is like to fight these battles when you are in such pain you cannot think of anything else. The pain becomes your life.
My insurance coverage included coverage for my surgery. In fact a month before my surgery my bosses wife had her back operated on. It took them less than two weeks to have surgery scheduled and done. So don't spout off about the contracts. My insurance company was supposed to provide no more than $4000 out of pocket in hospital expenses. See they have fine lines now. They say approved but not guaranteed. That's great huh?
I paid for insurance. I read the paperwork. My attorney's advise wait till they sue you??? Most attorneys want $50000 to take up insurance or medical fraud claims. I have searched.
Pre-paid legal and other advise please dont' throw that at us. We are a story of a broken system. there's more.
See our daughter is 21 and has epilepsy now that insurance lapsed she too goes on the system. Good for her because now all of you can pay in taxes her medication coverage. She works and lives on her own. She has 7 ambulance bills. Her medication without a prescription card is over $1000 a month. She cannot live without the meds. So I am encouraging her to go in the system. At least she can no longer worry about the high costs for her meds. Yes after everything I encourage her to get on the Colorado Indigent Care system so she can no longer worry about coverage for herself. She barely makes it. I cannot help her.
How about my cousin who has Huntington's disease? 3 of them have it actually. One says he's better off in jail because at least there he gets take care of?? WTF???
Health is a right! NOt a choice.
You can provide all the advise but what happened happened. I have an extreme distrust in insurance companies. I myself may have to rely on the indigent care program and that's fine. I then can be one of these lazy people everyone has to pay for right?
You're mother in law had the money. see health is about money now not about care. My doctors in Vail took care of my bosses wife quicker than me. I brought this up and was told every case is different, yet we had similar surgeries. Her's was done in a week. Mine took two years!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes I am now going to stop worrying about all of this. I am going to let my daughter and i depend on a system the insurance companies drove me to depend on.
We would of all been better off dealing directly with the hospital and making payment arrangements with the directly, insurance just provided more pain than you can ever imagine.
I posted this for my husband. See in his life he cares for his daughter, me and his parents. All of us have a disability and are fighting insurance red tape somewhere. His father is recently legally blind, and has a serious heart condition.
See after all this is written and after reading the entire posting. My husband is emotional and you have to read why. I realize you can tell US anything you want. But what do you say to a 21 year old who was born with something and she can't get a regular life lived because she works to pay for meds??
