Ham Radio Freedom

I ran across an incredibly good paper this morning, from Microsoft of all places!!! What's even more surprising is that the authors are on our side. This is really a MUST READ paper!!! I know it's long at 25 pages, but only the first 19 pages are the report. The rest is references. Give it 2-3 pages and you will be hooked!

Great stuff thanks for posting.

No doubt there are petty laws and regulations. There are some people that try to Live Free or rise above such nonsense as much as possible. It doesn't always work but it has for several years all over NH in from time to time in the border states.

RF Engineer here too. I'm not a ham (at least not yet). I don't really want to be in that database. I also don't understand why so many restrictions are placed on ham operators. I thought the whole idea was to promote innovation in wireless technology. The no-encryption rule seems nuts. You're not kidding about the FCC regs being nonsense as well. Just my opinion, but I think the spectrum would be a lot more interesting if there were less regulations.

Getting a grant for a new design seems to always end up being a frustrating, long process. Even if the testing goes smooth without any glitches, the labs always seem to drag things on for months. I think it is because they can. The cost of testing is outrageous and the turnaround time is usually too long for any kind of small business to survive. /rant

Anyway, great to see other RF types here.

I'm getting ready to start studying for my HAM license as I think it's an awesome resource for preparedness. Along those lines, I've read and also talked to a few people about the potential to use HAM as an alternative communication network. If you have the right equipment you can basically send email or fax transmissions through packets over radio signals without easily being detected. Has anyone here tried this successfully? Or tried it at all?

Trying to get up to speed with MT-63 (2000 L) using the FLDIGI stuff. So far it's been hit and miss -but that might be due to an antenna issue.. it's quite a challenge for me. Going from 0 to 100 in a matter days with this stuff. Wish I could report better news but that's where I'm at with it for now.

So far I've sent and received digital to myself with my radios successfully -but I can't quite copy another station with the same success.

Don't know about the "without easily being detected" part. Seems if they want to hear you they WILL hear you.

Will share what I learn as I go. Good luck on the studying -I suggest studying for both the Tech and the General license and getting the "privileges" in one fell swoop. Got my tech and going for my General this coming Saturday. (Field Day)

EDIT: Got my "slant AG" today. 3 incorrect. Memorize and spew, memorize and spew. :)
