One truck going from 10 mpg to 20 mpg could save 1000 gallons per year (assuming he drives 20,000 miles). This is equivalent to SIX cars going from 30 mpg to 40 mpg. In that regard, he is the one "saving" the environment. She is likely overpaying for too little benefit and, thus, wasting resources.

And from the video, he has at least 3 people in the truck (or was it 2 kids and thus 4?). So the miles per person are even superior.

I didn't like the way he seemed to feel the need to justify anything to her, or us even.

So other than cost, is there a downside to having the conversion done and then continuing to use diesel? I assume it allows you to switch back and forth?

Yes. It is a two-tank system, meaning that you install a second fuel tank into your vehicle. The vehicle is started on diesel or biodiesel, and after reaching operating temperatures, you switch over to vegetable oil. This prevents excessive carbon buildup on your piston heads. The vehicle can be run on diesel without ever switching if you want, and diesel can be put in the second tank if you want to, but the heat exchanger which uses engine coolant to heat the oil to thin it out will cause diesel to expand in the injector pump and wear out the seals faster, as well as reducing fuel efficiency unless you build in a bypass of the heat exchange unit.

The conversion will actually help running regular diesel if you live in minnesota or other subarctic and arctic areas as it will eliminate fuel gelling in the veggie tank. Also, it can help run Biodiesel which can gel at temps as high as 55*F. Remember you still have your original diesel system in place, and operational. You are just adding a vegetable oil system to it. The veggie system can run more than just veggie oil too. Tranny fluid, hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, motor oil, kerosene, lamp oil, animal fats (requires heated pumping system.) and many other long-chain hydrocarbons.

No. That will vapor lock or blow up a diesel engine just like running gasoline will. LPG Liquid Propane Gas is a shorter carbon chain than gasoline (C3H8) once released from a pressurized container is a vapor, and should be run in an Otto cycle (spark ignition) engine just like Octane, the key ingredient in gasoline, (C8H18) also vaporizes at normal atmospheric pressure.

LPG conversions are for gasoline (otto cycle) spark ignition engines and involve a pressurized tank and a gas flow regulator instead of a carbeurator.

Petroleum diesel's key ingredient is Cetane. Cetane is C16H34. A much longer chain of carbon, and remains liquid at normal temperatures and pressures.

Most vegetable oils are actually triglycerides with 16-18 carbon atoms per molecule. They differ from the refined -ane fuels in that they contain oxygen atoms as well as carbon and hydrogen as well a double bonds which are absent from the simple basic carbon molecules represented by the -ane family. Methane, Ethane, propane, Butane, Pentane, Hexane, Heptane, Octane, Nonane, Decane, etc.
