GOP REP: BOEHNER MAY RESIGN TONIGHT... REBELS HAVE 17-20 VOTES

I doubt it would happen but they don't have to choose a speaker from the House or the Senate.

Nothing is going to improve if we get rid of Boehner and replace him with someone like Eric Cantor.

That's never happened before and isn't likely to happen. The Speaker should be an elected member of the caucus and know his colleagues to have confidence in them.

Although they might all vote for some phantom candidate like Gingrich just to get rid of Boehner. Gohmert proposed him at the caucus meeting but no-one seconded it.

How much you wanna bet those 17 to 25 votes include the four libertarian leaning republicans he stripped of their committee positions?

i thought speaker was elected by a simple majority of those present to vote.
that is why they could get by with 17 if the total number of votes are lower.

This is the impression I was under... which leads me to believe a Democrat could easily win the speakership.

Which i'd be thrilled with. Let the Dems own this mess!

The speaker needs 50% +1 of all members. The GOP control 230 odd votes. Pelosi and the Dems have 200, so there's no chance of them getting the gavel.

What if Democrats voted for Boner?

They're unlikely to do that but even if they do it means Boehner is speaker because of Democrat votes which is an untenable position. He couldn't operate as speaker and retain the confidence of his caucus if he's in power thanks to Dem votes so he would have to resign or face a revolt on every piece of legislation

All of which infighting would be good for Democrats.

The infighting wouldn't last long, he would resign in embarrassment.. you can't be speaker of the majority party with the minorities votes, it couldn't practically work .

Boehner would resign immediately if he didn't have the voters to continue being speaker. It would be unfathomable for him to seek Democratic votes and if he did that, there were be a lot more Republican "rebels".

Cantor seems poised to replace Boehner, he isn't much better if at all but Boehner's actions cannot be tolerated.
