PORTLAND, Ore. -- Next Monday, the Republican presidential hopefuls are scheduled to debate here in Oregon, but now Mitt Romney has announced, he will not be among them.
Romney has said he will instead head to Illinois for that state's Tuesday primary, instead of joining his adversaries in Portland.
Oregon Republican Chairman Allen Alley says he believes there is a possibility Romney will reconsider if Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Ron Paul still attend.
Those candidates are expected to give their confirmation sometime today with the Oregon Republican Party making a final decision about the debate tomorrow.

Previously, only Gingrich was going to do it, and I can kind of see why the campaign thought that might not be worth it. But if any two others go, I think it would be good for Ron to go as well. Just my two cents.

I think if it's a good call to go, if 3/4 of the contenders (including Paul) show up it's a net benefit as far as I can see :)

Definitely should do the debate, especially since he is getting better at debates over time!

I live just outside of Portland and I would love to see this, but it's okay if not... he already visited the area twice!

Romney hasn't got anything to gain by attending another debate - so he probably won't, regardless of what the others do. He figures he is the nominee by now and just doesn't want to mess it up.

It doesn't matter. Any questions for Ron would be "Why haven't you won any states?" "Why are you still in the race?" "Will you run 3rd party?" "Why are you campaigning just to send a message?"

Questions are not important. Answers are. He'll do all right if he shows up.

It is PBS. It might be the first decent questions of the election cycle.

We need any and all free media. ANY. Gotta go even if it's only Rick and Newt, no choice.

Let's all urge the campaign to do the debate in tonight's Facebook chat!

Whether the debates are a good venue for him or not doesn't matter--at this point, he has nothing to lose!

Didn't we get second in Oregon? How good are our chances with a good debate performance?

EDIT: Never mind, forgot everyone else dropped out lol

If Santorum and the Grinch agree, Paul should go as well - Romney could not pass it up without looking like a total chicken shit, and that's the last thing he can afford to look like.

Ron Paul in a 3 man debate would be devastating. Look at how strong he's been in the last 2 debates when there's only 4 people.

We should let the campaign know we want him to do it. Could you imagine a 1v1 with Gingrich the 'master debater'?

I seriously doubt Santorum or Gingrich would have the kahunas to say yes to this.

I think with Gingrich alone it might not be worth it.

It would be worth it. Paul's ideals are too strong and their time has come. It would be evident within 5 minutes that Gingrich isn't in the same class. Gingrich would be embarrassed. He'd probably drop out afterwards.

Paul's stump speeches are good but anyone who's seen older footage of Paul in a debate setting with free reign to talk knows that this is when he's at his best.

No one in this race can stand on the stage 1v1 with this man.
