I want to buy a handgun. I'm looking for something with a lot of stopping power, isn't too expensive, and is well constructed and easy to load.

I kind of like revolvers, but clips are fine!

Ugh, handguns have mags, not clips. That is TV lingo.

If you talk to a gun salesman using that language, he will know he can jip you, as you are obviously uneducated on MANY well known things about guns.

Xeno,

Despite what some may say about Taurus, they make an excellent .38 special handgun in the model 85. It's a snub nose, five rounds, but it is well built and ideal for concealed carry or self defense. Get some good self-defense ammo (hollow points) and you're all set. They run about $350ish

Ruger 9mm. Cheap solid gun that your wife won't be afraid to shoot. :)

You may like the IDEA of revolvers, have you ever shot one? Repeatedly? I guess on the upside, they don't jam.

I will be the fanboy for this of course...I have personal experiences I can share with you if it weighs in your decision making. I like Glock's due to their reliability and ability to eat any ammo. Used versions are just as reliable.

Any Glock.

Revolvers have a reliability function that is unbeatable by a semi-auto. If a round fails to fire, then simply pull the trigger again and you will be at the next round. Semi-autos require you to clear the failed round/stuck case.

Springfield's are good as well, they come with many accessories.

You should go to a range that has rentals and demo as many as you can and stick with what you shoot well.

I agree with this COMPLETELY.

Hubby can get a brand new baby glock with steel sights for around $490 here.. I would suggest it.

More specific

You need to be more specific about "cheap' and "stopping power".

OMG.. that is probably THE WORST gun to own.

It ways about 900 lbs, are known for jamming more than shooting..and must I say, "you get what you pay for"?

When you are looking for a cheap gun because you have a small budget you won't find the perfect gun.

Hi-Point may be a few ounces heavier, and it may break down or fail to fire at some point, however both Hi-Point and Taurus offer life time warranties.

Xenophage is looking for a starter pistol and I think we should be a little less flamboyant when providing him info. :)

When it comes to high dollar purchases, being budget conscious and quality-minded, I tend to look for used versions of better quality products.

You have to be more careful and do your homework, but you end up with a better overall value.

I've shot a few revolvers. If I'm not planning to be in an extended firefight, they're fast and easy to load and look good to boot :)

I've shot fewer handguns than I have rifles, though.

Stop screwing with him.
