Glenn Beck absolutely trashing Rand Paul

I'm proud to say Beck called me a sellout once.

What's more, Nixon called me crooked, John Wayne Gacy called me a murderous bastard, Lady Gaga and Madonna both called me a slut, Warren Buffet called me a money grubber and Dick Cheney said I was conspiratorial, too.

I listened to it live. Beck didn't sound that anti Rand to me. He basically just said the same thing that many of us have said, which is that Ron couldn't win the Presidency running on a completely honest and principled platform, and Rand has had to make some compromises with the establishment in order to have a real chance to win in 2016 and do what his dad couldn't do.

Boy, it seems you really get around. ;)

It makes sense he would be upset. Randal has spent his time in the Senate carving out a new moderate movement based on working together to reduce the size of government and at the same time trying to force more oversight of government agents. He fought his way out of the crazy radical corner and has a chance to actually do something. The gatekeepers are not happy.

Yeah. And the candidate who gets endorsed and supported by the Beck-Levin-Hannity types always loses. The candidates that they hated the most (McCain and Romney) ended up winning.

If you have a chance re-listen. Here is the article on their website teasing the interview titled Rand=Nancy Pelosi?

Beck and his co hosts don't like that Rand isn't as uncompromising in his tactics as Cruz. Cruz has basically taken a no compromise, take no prisoners approach. I think Rand just figures that anyone who has the full support of people like Beck and Levin could never appeal to people in the middle and could never become President. Rand is going after the people who describe themselves as "somewhat conservative," the people who were responsible for nominating McCain and Romney. Still, why this segment on Beck's show may have been slightly negative towards Rand, I don't see it as a complete hit piece. Beck still said that he would support Rand if it came down to a race between Rand and Jeb Bush.

I guess I naively thought Rand would be a first choice or even a strong second choice for a guy who calls himself a libertarian. I don't expect there ever to be another credible candidate in my lifetime as libertarian as Rand Paul.

Yeah, he should drop the libertarian label. He's basically a conservative who supports gay marriage.

Yeah, "absolutely trashing" is a big stretch. Heck, I have heard worse spoken in here about Rand. This was nothing.

Also note that people like Beck is in the business of making money by riling up the losing side (who are angry and sad) against the party in power. He makes more money if the Dems are in power, because then his listener base is mad and bitter and will lap up everything he says. That's why Beck has no qualms in pushing a lunatic like Cruz who has little chance against someone like Hillary in the general. The Dem base hate Cruz 10x more than Rand, so they will be highly motivated to come out and vote against him. Beck knows this.

Agreed. People take things way out of context. In fact, if I do remember correctly, Beck thinks Rand has a better shot at the winning presidency than Ted Cruz because, in his view, Rand has learned to master the art of coalescing party leaders around him and embedding libertarian ideas into the political mainstreams, whereas Pat and Stu prefer Ted. Both have their strengths, of course: Rand knows how to play well with young audiences, and Ted has the uncanny ability to, not only crush opponents in political debates, but raise money from Value Voters and evangelicals as well. Ultimately, the Republican Party will need to unite both civil libertarians and religious conservatives to win, which unfortunately isn't happening. Jack Hunter, for all his faults, penned a great piece on how political libertarianism can be made palatable for socially conservative audiences. He also points out many of libertarianism's leading spokespersons (Tom Woods, Hans-Hermann Hoppe, Ron Paul) are social conservatives themselves. Glenn is pretty enamored with both men, but Pat, unfortunately, is turned off by Rand because of his pandering on Voter ID and immigration. It amazes me, though, why he thinks Marco Rubio's sudden change of heart on immigration is sincere, rather than opportunistic. Pat makes great points about how conservatives need to stop pandering to certain demographic groups and diluting (as opposed to refining) their message, but seems to have some sort of blind infatuation with Rubio. Glenn Beck, on the other hand, has called Rubio a Marxist piece of garbage. We have to remember that Glenn Beck's radio program is hosted by three men, all of whom have different opinions, not only on tactical strategy, but on matters of substance. I've hard them yell at each other on air over relatively petty differences.

Glenn Beck absolutely trashing Rand Paul

I actually listened to the clip, and I didn't get that impression at all. It was more like a discussion that might occur right here on RPF than an "absolute trashing".

That's basically what I heard too.
