Iran-backed Shiite forces in Iraq now estimated at 100,000 – US military spox

Erdogan to Visit Tehran Next Week to Launch Turkey-Iran-Russia Coalition

... "Given the reports claiming that Erdogan had come to Iran the night of coup
and then returned to Turkey after its failure,
the Turkish president's visit to Tehran is highly important
in establishing new relations between Tehran and Ankara," Arabic language al-Hayat newspaper said in a report.

Sources told al-Hayat daily that a trilateral meeting, consisting of the Iranian, Turkish and Russian officials,
is due to be held to confer on ways to terminate the Syria war,
adding that part of Erdogan's trip to Tehran will be focused on this issue.

... According to al-Arab, the triangle of Iran-Turkey-Russia
is forming an international coalition to confront the West.
Really? ok.

So we can quickly summarize developments of a few last weeks:

Russia has permanent base in Syria as well as multiple others for their use.

Iran opened all Iranian military bases for Russian forces, strategic and fighter bombers are stationed in Hamadan.

Iraq opened its airspace for Russian air force operations.

Chinese army is going to support Damascus with humanitarian aid as well as with advisors/instructors.

Turkey wants to open NATO airbase for Russian airforce.

The first article in the above post has an important little gem:

Aside from the PMF (Iraq's Popular Mobilization Force),
another outfit – Iran's Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force
is now forecast to play a massive role over in Iraq’s Mosul, which has been in IS’ grip since 2014.

During a Tuesday press conference, Garver commented
on the prospect of Shiite militias participating in the liberation
of the Sunni-dominated Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city.
This was upon hearing reports from the PMF (Iraq Shia Militia)
that Iran’s prominent military commander from the Syrian theater of operations,
General Qassem Soleimani, has moved his troops
to the outskirts of Mosul
to gear up for the operation. (that's HUGE news)

This was reported by the Long War Journal after remarks translated from the Fars News Agency.

However Garver, according to Fox, also stated: (lol  )
“We are not coordinating with the Iranians in any way, we are not working with them in any way.”
He added that “the government of Iraq comes up with the plan, we are supporting [their] plan for the seizure of Mosul.”

Soleimani is said to be planning a coordinated operation with Iraqi government forces and the PMF.

This multi-pronged approach to fighting IS in Syria and Iraq
also got a new player in the face of China,
as Beijing announced Damascus’s blessing
to have the Chinese military provide humanitarian aid to Syria
while also training Syrian personnel.

That is extremely significant.
I have read many, many articles
analyzing and noting that the US was 'determined' that the PMU
(much less Iran/Qud/Hezbollah) was to have NO PART in the strike force against Mosul.
It was going to be 'strictly' a party that no SHIA were invited to.
Why?
Well 1. reason was certainly pride and revenge against Russia/Iran for the Syrian conflict takeover.
the OTHER was most certainly the future partitioning of North Iraq they have planned...
namely the creation of 'Kurdistan'.
Currently, the Germans are arming the Peshmerga to the teeth... on 'credit' of course.
The Russians as well, have 'donated' over 1 million Kalashnikov rounds to Erbil's private army: The Peshmerga
for the Mosul purge.

The main difference is the objectives: Peshmerga/Erbil/Kurds WANT Mosul for a future 'Kurdistan'.
The PMF (PMU) militia are ALL about Iraq Sovereignty in the re-capture of Mosul...
Tehran and Baghdad are ALL about stopping the West from creating any more puppet govs in the ME.

This is the FIRST article I've seen
CLEARLY outlining that Iran ITSELF is (now) openly declaring
its intentions to be ACTIVELY involved in Mosul.
in other words...
any 'plans' in the works between Washington and Erbil
about 'annexing' Mosul into a future 'Kurdistan'...
ain't gonna happen.
Iran aims to help Iraq hold on to its territorial integrity...
so the message from Iran and Iraq is clear:
They won't sit back while the Pentagon 'Nation-builds' a Kurdistan.

This bold Statecraft HAD to have been 'hatched' in Moscow.
It 'smells' like it has 'RUSSIA' written ALL over it.

Camp Lemonnier, a United States Naval Expeditionary Base, is the only permanent US military base in Africa,

(toldja. It's the ONLY base the Pentagon admits to.)

It's subtle... but I think this is a mssg to the hegemons

SOROS / Russia
(his 1990 orgs were 'discovered' and booted by Putin admin long ago and even MORE thorough recently
Keep in mind.... the Russian 'article' was a PRO Soros article... LAMENTING their purge... but.. of course...
it's the Western backed 'Moscow Times'... so hey... whaddyaexpect?)

While ago I read Russia has arrest warrant on Soros.
Dunno if it is true but all organizations associated with him were wiped out of Russia.
I found a 4 year old article published in The Moscow Times where they wrote this:

"In the 1990s, many impressive independent think tanks were formed,
largely with Western financing.
George Soros' Open Society Institute was the pioneer.

Other American foundations followed suit:
the Eurasia Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Ford Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation, and the MacArthur Foundation.
The European Union and the World Bank also made major efforts.
The leading foreign think tanks were Carnegie Moscow Center,
the Russian European Center for Economic Policy and, briefly, the World Bank's Bureau of Economic Analysis."

The article is called "Rise and Fall of Russia's Economic Think Tanks"
and it clearly shows whose asset this newsweb is
as it clearly denounces wiping out such organizations:

"The third blow was devastating.
In January 2006, Putin signed the law on nongovernmental organizations.
Its obvious intention was to restrain all independent organizations
through a massive aggravation of bureaucratic impediments.
The regime exposed think tanks to all kinds of harassment through audits and raids,
claiming that they might not have complied with all tax laws."

IRAQ: Peshmerga will be considered occupiers: Iraqi MP
(this is Kurd/Erbil media... firing up the 'faithful' for 'Independent Kurdistan or Die!' Stupid move.)

"A member of the Iraqi parliament stated on Thursday that
Peshmerga forces will receive the same treatment as the Islamic State (IS)
if they do not withdraw from liberated areas."

PeshmergaMosulReuters.JPG

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan24) – A member of the Iraqi parliament stated on Thursday that Peshmerga forces will receive the same treatment as the Islamic State (IS) if they do not withdraw from liberated areas.

Mohammed Saihoud an Iraqi MP from the State of Law bloc, led by the former Iraqi PM Nuri al-Maliki, said that “if Peshmerga forces do not retreat from the liberated areas, they will be considered as occupiers, not liberators.”

“IS and Peshmerga forces are equal before the gunfire of the Iraqi security forces and Hashd al-Shaabi if they insist on the occupation of the liberated areas,” the Shia MP told an Iraqi news outlet.

Last Wednesday, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) spokesperson responded to the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’ who said that Peshmerga forces should remain in their current positions and do not advance further towards Mosul.

The KRG spokesperson Safeen Dizayee told Kurdistan24 that Peshmerga forces will not withdraw from the areas in their control because Peshmerga is the source of security and stability for people.

Dizayee stated that Peshmerga forces will make further advances towards the Islamic State (IS)-held areas surrounding Mosul that are considered outside of the Kurdistan Region administration.

“The areas were liberated by the blood of the Peshmerga forces. Peshmerga will not retreat,” he reaffirmed.

Arif Taifoor, the commander of Peshmerga forces in Khazir frontline told Kurdistan24 on Thursday
that the Peshmerga forces will liberate all the areas included in the Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution,
particularly IS-held Christian-populated areas and they will stay there.

Kurds are making a HUGE mistake
if they side with the same party
that is fully responsible for the destabilization of the middle east.
Thay have passively allowed illegal military instalations of the US army
on territory that THEY CONTROL...
despite the fact that support
from the Russian coalition was offered
and even provided for in military equipment, CAS
together with the diplomatic level
as the diplomatic mission of Rojava was opened in Moscow almost a year ago.

They (still) have the great opportunity
to do something for the land where they live,
stick together with other people of the region
and wipe out hegemonic proxy armies.

Following this, the weight of their claims
will rise significantly because of proven loyalty
to the whole region, not only for their personnal aims.

This is the only way that they can achieve their aims.
and Kurds should not miss this chance...
otherwise
their destiny will follow the destiny of ISIS as Iraqi official said...

China is building its first overseas military outpost just miles from the largest US military base in Africa.

The Chinese naval base in Djibouti is positioned on a 90-acre plot of land
and expected to be completed next year, according to the Wall Street Journal.
China’s construction of the base represents one of Beijing’s latest efforts
to establish itself as a global maritime power.

The Chinese naval base is close to Camp Lemonnier, the US base in Djibouti,
which supports roughly 4,000 US and allied military and civilian personnel and defense contractors.
It is the primary base of operations for US Africa Command.

Speaking in the video message that was played in the 24th International Kurdish Culture Festival in Cologne on Saturday, Bayik said,
I call all the people of Kurdistan and the people of Rojava foremost
to stand against the invasion of the Turkish state

and to raise the resistance in the social sphere, the fields of politics, diplomacy and military.”

The war will deepen
as the Turkish state has entered the territory of Rojava and Syria
with the support of certain powers.

If acting powers do not want the war to escalate even more
in Syria and in the Middle East in general,
Turkey needs to be taken out from the territory of Syria and Rojava.
The purpose of the Turkish state is clear.
They want to eliminate all the Kurdish people through Rojava.”

Syrian Kurds vow to fight to the death to stop Turkey 'invading' their territory

The Syrian Kurds, who have been the most effective US ally in the war against Isis in Syria,
now see themselves as victims of international betrayal.

The US support for the Turkish military intervention in Syria on August 24th,
and
demand that the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG),
(who had just captured the strategic town of Manbij from Isis after a hard-fought siege),
should (now) pull back east of the Euphrates river,
were bitter blows to the Kurds.

Without whole-hearted US support,
they are vulnerable to attacks by the numerous enemies who encircle them,
notably Turkey and possibly, in future, the Syrian government.

Kurdish offensive against ISIS in northern Aleppo goes horribly wrong

In the early morning hours, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF),
spearheaded by the Kurdish YPG, launched renewed attacks on ISIS villages
directly north of Aleppo city.

During an assault on Tall Qarrah,
upwards of 30 YPG combatants were shot dead by entrenched ISIS fighters
who were expecting the offensive, Amaq Agency reported.

Adding insult to injury, two armored Kurdish vehicles,
a T-72 tank and a BMP, were also destroyed during the clashes.

Foreign Intelligence Services Try to Unite ‘Opposition’ Groups in South of Syria

Representatives of foreign intelligence services
continue to try to organize a union of various groups under names
such as the Jabhat Fath Janub (the Front of the Conquest of the South),
the Jabhat As-Soir al-Janubiyah (the Southern Revolutionary Front) etc.
in the south of Syria.

The main purpose of the foreign ‘experts’
is to form relatively serious force,
consisting of disparate local groups,
with support of the Jabhat al-Nusra.
And this force should become a real threat for Damascus.

At the same time, there also is an unclear situation at the south,
in Suwayda Province, near the Syrian border with Iraq and Jordan.
Young men from among the Syrian refugees,
trained by American and British instructors in training camps in Syria and Jordan,
are also sent to the battlefield.
Officially, their goal is to fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group,
whose troops are trying to keep this desert area under control
in the interests of illegal transportation of produced oil.

However, taking into account the fact
that a significant part of the population of the region is so-called Druze –
an esoteric ethnoreligious group, which is neutral to Damascus and has ties with Israel –
from the point of view of preservation of the state sovereignty of Syria,
the situation is quite alarming.

There's also a small consortium of 'investors'... neocons all.. some names you'd recognize...
who did the exploratory work and determined there to be significant oil / gas deposits
the Syria side of the Golan Heights. They're licking their chops at the prospects
of a balkanized Syria.
The company name escapes me... but w/ a little digging you can find it.

►I found a curiously insightful essay
describing what is about to happen
at the above tripartite meeting in Moscow. HERE
(I don't even know who wrote it. Good stuff.)

Hey.. it's only a thread right? :D
So... I decided to post the entire text for some Sunday viewing.
Anyone who's been following this epic confluence of world powers and intrigue
would benefit from digesting this.
It's got a little bit of everything including some history.

===========================

Beirut: Russian President Vladimir Putin is suggesting a tripartite summit in Moscow this September,
between himself and his Turkish and Syrian counterparts, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar Al Assad.

If it does happen, this would be the first time
that the two friends turned sworn enemies come face-to-face
since their last meeting in Damascus in January 2011.

During their meeting in St. Petersburg in August,
Putin and Erdogan agreed on a basket of political issues
related to their country’s roles in the Syrian battlefield.

The understanding comes amidst a warming of ties
between Ankara and Moscow
after the failed coup attempt in July
and Russia’s military involvement in the Syria War since September.

Erdogan sought Russian assistance
in amputating the Kurdish threat on the Syrian-Turkish border,
and in taking border towns and cities
that he sees as vital for his country’s security.

If the Russians cooperated on seriously handling the Kurdish threat,
he was willing to fall in-line with President Putin’s strategy for Syria,
realizing that a clean cut victory against Al Assad,
as Erdogan had anticipated back in 2011,
was becoming increasingly difficult.

Instead of getting further entrenched in the Syrian War,
which has backfired on Turkey with an influx of refugees
and major terrorist attacks in cities like Ankara and Istanbul,
the Turkish government prefers to let the Russians lead on Syria
if Turkish interests are preserved
and a face-saving back-out plan is engineered by Moscow.

Serious steps have already been taken in this direction,
aimed solely at pleasing Erdogan,
including allowing his tanks to invade the Syrian border city of Jarabulus
and bombing Kurdish military positions in Al Hasaka.

In exchange for Russian cooperation on both issues,
Erdogan has agreed to let the Syrian Army re-take Aleppo,
and surrendered to Putin’s insistence on the fate of Al Assad.

Putin is investing in the US’s visible absence from the region
during the last five months of President Obama’s tenure,
and trying to hammer out an agreement
that will become a de-facto reality
by the time a new president reaches the Oval Office next January.

For his vision in Syria to pass
he needs full Turkish cooperation
and a thawing in Turkish-Syrian relations.

Putin’s suggested dates for the tripartite summit are 18-22 September.

Last week,
a senior Syrian military delegation in Moscow
discussed details of the tripartite summit,
headed by President of the National Security Bureau General Ali Mamlouk,
and Commander of Military Intelligence General Mohammad Mhalla.

Meanwhile,
the Commander of Turkish Intelligence General Hakan Fidan
will be visiting Damascus for the same purpose
between 10-15 September 2016.

If it happens, there will be no warmth at the summit,
the Syrians have conditioned: no handshakes, no side-talks, just one photograph
and high politics negotiations behind closed doors.

The political endgame will be signed off completely by the Russians
and it will include a formula based on the Vienna communiqué of last October and UNSCR 2254.

It has to happen before the US elections, said source in Damascus,
and all sides will market it and treat it as start of the “political transition.”

It won’t be a transition from government to opposition
but rather from Baath rule into a power-sharing one
that ushers gradual democracy on the long run.

Erdogan has seemingly agreed to Russian plans
that all “sovereignty” portfolios: Foreign Affairs, Interior, Finance, Education, and Justice,
are kept with the Syrian regime.

The remaining portfolios in the 30-man cabinet
will be divided equally in tens,
between the regime, the opposition (without going into detail which opposition this would be) and independents.

The Syrians have seemingly agreed to appoint three vice-presidents:
one independent, one opposition, and one government figure.

The transition period will then start and last for 18-months,
and it will supervise drafting of a new constitution,
restoring calm to different cities and towns,
and combating terrorism.

At the end it will also supervise parliamentary and presidential elections,
and if Putin gets his way,
Al Assad is entitled to run for a new tenure at the president,
which will last until 2024.

Some History

Syrian-Turkish relations were always strained after collapse of the Ottoman Empire back in 1918.
When the two republics were young, they often clashed politically,
with the Turks accusing Arab nationalists in Damascus of betraying the Ottoman crown,
and consecutive governments in Damascus accusing the Turks
of having been an occupying force, no different from French colonizers.

In 1939, the Turks reached a deal with the French mandate regime in Syria,
calling for a step-by-step annexation of the Sanjak of Alexanderetta,
a narrow coastal plain backed by a chain of mountains
on the lower valley of the Orontes River.

Its main city was Antioch, a prosperous metropolis that Turkey laid claim to after World War I.

The 1920 Treaty of Sevres
had fixed the post-Ottoman Syrian-Turkish border,
giving Alexanderetta to Syria.

Prosperity in the post-war era had muzzled dissent in the Sanjak,
but due to the world depression,
ethnic and religious communities began sinking back into communal loyalties,
inspired no doubt by the surge in Syrian and Turkish nationalism.

Relations never recovered after the Turkish annexation of Alexanderetta,
and were on the verge of a complete show-down
when in 1998,
the Turkish army amassed on the Syrian border, threatening war with Damascus
if Al Assad did not extradite Abdullah Ocelan,
leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)

who was operating from Syria and leading a guerrilla war
against the Turkish government.

Ocelan was forced to leave and eventually captured by the Turks,
and remains in Turkish custody until today.

Relations gradually improved in the upcoming years,
when Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezar took part in Al Assad’s funeral in June 2000.

When the AKP came to power in Turkey,
then-Prime Minister Erdogan put full focus on Syria,
boosting trade and commerce, lifting visas for Syrians,
and investing in a strong personal friendship with President Bashar Al Assad.

The relationship collapsed at the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011,
when the Turks pushed for a power-sharing formula
between Al Assad and the outlawed Syrian Muslim Brotherhood.

Diplomatic relations were subsequently severed,
and the Turks have since been the main political and financial backers of the Syrian Opposition,
establishing the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the summer of 2011,
followed by the Syrian National Council (SNC).

For the past five years, Erdogan has not missed an opportunity
to call for Al Assad’s downfall while as recently as last April,
Al Assad accused Erdogan of being a “butcher” and “thug.”

More recently, thanks to Russian mediation, the relationship has somewhat cooled.
Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has twice called for normalization with Damascus
while Syrian state-run media has stopped accusing Turkey
of being behind the battles of Aleppo,
putting full blame on Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Sweida, a region bordering Jordan, is otherwise not an oil rich province.
This could possibly suggest some corrupt elements of the National Defence Forces (NDF)
have sold off oil to the Islamic State for personal profit, and to compensate for meager wages.
