The door is about to close on Gary Johnson.

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates has set a “mid-September” deadline for Johnson and the other third-party candidates to meet three criteria to qualify for the first debate later this month: “evidence of constitutional eligibility,” “evidence of ballot access” and “indicators of electoral support.”

Johnson clearly meets the first two qualifications: A two-term former governor of New Mexico, Johnson is a citizen and older than 35 years of age. And the Johnson campaign said Wednesday that he’ll be on the ballot in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, meaning he’s eligible to win all 538 electoral votes at stake on November 8.

But on the third qualification, Johnson falls short, and it isn’t particularly close. The commission says he must be polling at 15 percent in five major, national polls, “using the average of those organizations' most recent publicly-reported results at the time of the determination.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Johnson is at only 9 percent, according to a POLITICO estimate.

Todays Fox poll has Clinton @ 41 and Trump @ 40 , today's New York Times Poll has Trump & Clinton tied @ 42 , so , obviously it would be pretty hard for a third party candidate to hit 15 percent when the other two are pulling 84 or so .

Todays Fox poll has Clinton @ 41 and Trump @ 40 , today's New York Times Poll has Trump & Clinton tied @ 42 , so , obviously it would be pretty hard for a third party candidate to hit 15 percent when the other two are pulling 84 or so .

Funny how they work that out, huh?

Now, add to that that the media spend about 55% of their political coverage on Trump and 44% on Clinton and it's a wonder Johnson and Stein are polling anywhere close to where they are. That will be fixed after the first debate.

...folks, PLEASE!..stop calling these stinking republicrat events 'debates'...more accurately, they are phony, mostly carefully scripted press conferences...

...for one thing, in an honest 'debate' the participants themselves would control the dialogue...not corporate/bankster media shills...

...in an honest 'debate' you wouldn't have the participants knowing the questions prior to the debate...which has been admitted..

I agree. Its a staged event. Its theater. Johnson takes away votes from the two major party candidates. They can't have a threat to their duopoly (even how little it is). The debate will be a mixture of Middle School level put downs and scripted propaganda. The format is old. They should all be on skype arguing for a couple weeks taking questions from everyone and debating the other candidates instead of hiding from them. How about some Lincoln-Douglas debates?

If Johnson does get in it he better know his stuff so he doesn't come off dumbfounded again.
