Former New Mexico governor and great libertarian hope Gary Johnson has announced he will make a major announcement on April 21 at the New Hampshire State Capitol in Concord.

I hope he announces his campaign, and polls below 1% for every poll and drops out early. We need to focus the Liberarian message, and GJ just takes from RP.

I love Gary. I wish him the best, but this race is about Ron! It would benefit him, and the nation, and the movement, if he dropped out early.

We need more than one person speaking the message. I agree, Ron is the best shot to win but at this stage it's all about changing the GOP

Announcement at Concord.

Sure doesn't have anything to do with the Senate.

He needs to run and drop out before the primaries (in november or december) and support Ron Paul publicly after he "concedes".

Read the thread in the Ames straw poll section called "The Ames Accord". Gary needs to stay in the race until just before the Ames Straw Poll. Then his campaign and the Paul campaign need to agree that the weaker candidate drops and endorses the stronger candidate. After Ames the serious fundraising kicks into high gear and it hurts to have two liberty candidates in the race. Before Ames it's relatively harmless, with much gain coming from the increased media exposure and debate positioning.

I think Gary being in it hurts Ron from day 1. However, those who want Gary to win obviously have a different electoral goal.

Part of me hopes we have another liberty-lover sharing the stage with Paul at the debates, yet another part of me hopes he runs for the Senate, where he can probably do a lot of good.

I do think some good can come of Gary sharing the stage (assuming he polls well enough to get on the stage). After all, weak candidates like Duncan Hunter, Tommy Thompson, Sam Brownback and Tom Tancredo were in the early debates last time around.

Of course it hurts Ron, but it also helps him. It's my opinion from a strictly strategic perspective that the liberty movement benefits more by having both men in the race. Check out my thread on the Ames Accord in the Ames Straw Poll sub-forum.

Looks like Johnson will for sure be announcing his candidacy. Glad to hear. It will be excellent to see another libertarian on stage at the debates! I have a feeling he will campaign for a while, participate in some debates, then probably drop out because there isn't enough time for him to become a true contender in the 2012 race. By that time, hopefully a second libertarian on the national stage will give our message more credibility, and might attract more people to Ron Paul. Think positive people. We can't be selfish and try to EXCLUDE like minded people from spreading the message of liberty!

He's his own person and will run if he wants to. But he does Ron about as much good as Bachmann running --he takes votes. So of course I oppose all of those running against Ron, since I support Ron.

Zzzzzzz

Wake me up when Gary Johnson inevitably drops out. (Only after his presence costs Ron Paul donations and support at the Ames straw poll, no-doubt.)

I'm sure the media though will be more than happy to foist Johnson on Ron Paul supporters and effectively use him as a wedge. "Is this the real Libertarian all those Ron Paul supporters should be donating to?" What a waste of a winnable Senate seat in New Mexico, that will probably now be won by a socialist or a neoconservative.

The advantage of having more liberty-lovers in the primaries is that it legitimizes the candidates like Ron Paul.

When Ron was on his own, it was easy to dismiss his views because it appeared that no-one else shared them. However, with his increasing popularity these days and probably more liberty-oriented candidates running for 2012, one cannot simply dismiss the man, but must instead dismiss the ideas - which is harder to do.

^^^This.

This is true. We do not benefit in any way from Gary running or being in debates, it only takes attention away from Ron.

I hope Gary's "major announcement" is a run for the Senate, where he could actually do some good instead of harm the liberty movement.
