I was a strong supporter of Ron Paul back in 2008, even running one of his campaign offices, but my support is going to Gary Johnson this time around. While I'm glad to have Ron Paul in the race again, I'm hoping he will choose the right time to step aside and give his full support for Gov. Johnson as the next POTUS.

I agree that Bachmann will have more impact, but she is less directly TRADING on what Ron built and what Gary wants to just take over. She is certainly trying to get her share, but she just does it by showing she's different in areas she hopes will be attractive to different people, even though of course she is going for the tea party wave Ron helped spur to begin with. Her supporters don't come on here saying she and Ron should be in the debates then Ron should step aside at the right moment and let her take over...

I just want to say that I met Gary Johnson quite a few months ago, and I even posted a review of my experience on the forums. As I said back then, Gary Johnson IS one of us. I still hold that view. Gary Johnson may not sound like Ron Paul when discussing the issues, but he shares the exact concerns we do, and wants a similar outcome. It appears to me that a lot of people around here and the Daily Paul can't stand the fact that Ron Paul is starting to age, and that other people will have to take the torch for Ron Paul. This isn't just Ron's revolution, it's all of ours, and the more people who want to fight for the message the better! I will still be behind Ron 100% in 2012 (given he actually runs), but we can't keep shutting out people who stand on the side of liberty just because they are considered a competitor to Ron Paul.

With that being said, I wish Johnson the best of luck. I really do hope it comes down to a point where he campaigns for a while, spreads the message, participates in the debates, but then drops out before primary season comes around, because I do not think he will be able to gain much traction this election cycle.

Ron built this movement, fights for respect for the movement in the hostile GOP establishment, starts to get traction, and THEN Gary comes in from climbing mountains and is interested to take it over. I was open to liking him. I WANTED to like him, because I knew Ron wasn't going to be around forever. He turned me off, frankly. He is different from Ron on key issues, and his adherence to principle isn't nearly as consistent, and therefore is not inspiring. I disagree that they want similar outcomes, frankly, and think Gary is much more self centered about Gary than Ron is about Ron.

Also, let's put into perspective. Ron has never won a statewide election. Gary has won 2 in a 2 to 1 Democrat state. Hmmm. Maybe it's good we have someone who has been in a big chair preaching our message. Let's keep torpedoing every candidate not with the last name Paul as President.

GJ is running for himself, for his political career. RP is running out of obligation to his supporters. I don't think either have a snowball's chance in hell, so I'm okay with GJ in a few debates, but once the voting begins, he'll only dilute some of RP's numbers. I know RP can't win, but I'd like to see how many more votes he gets this year than 4 years ago. I predict more than double what he got in '08.

If abortion is such a big issue for you, you have a choice (no pun intended). Further if Gary gets good exposure during the primary and Ron ultimately wins, Ron can pick Gary as a running mate balancing the ticket. It's a win for everyone.

Gary can't touch Ron on principles, and if you think Ron's support wasn't a big part of Rand's success, look at Moffett.

Not to mention that Ron was leading in Senate polls in Texas without even putting his hat into the ring, until he made it clear he wasn't interested.

I think GJ will also pull some moderate GOPers as no one has been yelling "GARY JOHNSON!" at them for the past 4 years. Half of what hurts Congressman Paul are his peeps.

Gary already said he wouldn't pick Ron as running mate if he won. But that decision is downline past all the voting where they'd be competing. And you've just suggested Ron would lose prochoice votes from 'here' to Gary. Why would Ron Paul supporters support that?

I can't quite figure out why Johnson would throw his hat in the ring at this time, when there is an open senate seat where he would completely blow away the other candidates. But I did have a thought, could it be that he see that the liberty movement has Rand Paul waiting in the wings for a run in the near future? I don't think so, but this is Fox. They might do it just to draw support from Ron.
