Congressman Matt Gaetz Demands DHS Turn Over All Correspondence Referring to Vice President Kamala Harris as ‘Border Czar’

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas requesting his department turn over all correspondence since March 2021 that refers to Vice President Kamala Harris as the “border czar.”

As was widely reported in March 2021, President Joe Biden tasked Vice President Harris with becoming the “border czar” to oversee the massive influx of migrants coming across the U.S.–Mexico border. At the time, President Biden said Vice President Harris was “the most qualified person to do it.” However, Vice President Harris has recently denied being tasked with the position. Rep. Gaetz’s letter seeks to uncover all communication at DHS using the terms “czar,” “border,” “migration,” or “immigration” when referring to her.

Secretary Mayorkas:

Vice President Kamala Harris was, in March 2021, tasked by President Joe Biden to be the “border czar.” This was widely reported at the time (see, e.g., BBC, Biden tasks Harris with tackling migrant influx on US-Mexico border, available at https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-56516332). However, Vice President Harris has, weirdly, recently denied this fact.

Please provide the following information to my office by August 30, 2024:

1. All communications between the Office of the Vice President and any employee (including detailees) of the Department of Homeland Security, between March 24, 2021, and March 24, 2022, using the term “czar,” “border,” “migration,” or “immigration.”
2. Any communications of the Department of Homeland Security (including detailees), between March 24, 2021, and March 24, 2022, referring to Vice President Kamala Harris or the Office of the Vice President as “czar” or “lead,” or otherwise in any formal or informal chain-of-command related to border-policy issues; and
3. Any internal Department of Homeland Security directives or guidance, from 2021 to the present, referring to the Vice President or the Office of the Vice President as having any formal or informal clearance, approval, or stakeholder input on Departmental decisions.

Endless volleyball will not solve the problem. Both sides are contributory and feed off of each other which results in growth of government and government contracts.

Get government completely out of it, defund all of the programs, and things will return to normal.

Believing that is not realistic does not negate the fact that that is the only actual solution. Short of that, embrace the fact that your liberties will be reduced while you continue to foot the bill. If you think TSA is bad, just wait until it is rolled out domestically between the states. And once that is done, they will be thrilled to move on to the next step.

Dirt poor folks can't afford to eat. How in the world are they affording airline and ship tickets to get here, or traveling 2,000 miles on foot?

NGO's. Defund the NGO's [and DHS who are assisting with that effort] who are transporting them and things will return to normal. Immigration was actually at an all-time-low before the NGO's were being funded. Follow the Money.

You will always have people migrating here or there and there is nothing wrong with that. Some come to America, some like me go abroad. Some from France even decide to go Australia to open up a biker bar.
