In a speech outlining his views on how to resolve Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Libyan leader calls for creation of one state rather than two nations living side by side. He also advises US President Obama to give Osama bin Laden a chance to reform

...

Gaddafi called for the creation of one state rather than two nations living side by side.

"We can call it Isratine," he said.

If Jews did not accept a one-state solution, he said they could move to Hawaii, Alaska or an island in the Pacific. "They could live peacefully in an isolated setting."

He is an idiot. Although I've heard his son is pretty "liberal" and "progressive" which is a good thing (over there).

I vote for Yummy Cupcake Kingdom. I think it will soften the image and everyone will get along. Also unicorns will run free there.

zionists would NEVER accept a single state due to the fact that it would have to be NON-DEMOCRATIC for them to be in control (the same dilema the white S. Africans had).

The name is irrelevant.

Quaddafi is actually right. The only solution is one state. Almost every country around the world is multi-cultural and multi-religious. Create a constitution that protects everyones right to practice their religion. Jews are concerned about having a smaller population. Guarantee that they will have a certain number of seats in the new parliment.

Jews and Muslims live and work together peacefully side-by-side in cities around the world like New York and London, they can in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as well.

I wondered a bit about this last week. Correct me if I am wrong, but the two camps lived, relatively, peacefully for over a thousand years. Indeed, it was the Romans who broke Israel up and forced the diaspora. By the time the Muslims came into the picture, Palestine was predominantly Christian, but Jews have remained there since Moses...

I think it is mostly about positioning for control of Temple Mount (by three parties.) I see the Christians and Jews forming an alliance in order to oust the present occupants, but do not see how it will turn-out. (I do know that Blowback sucks!) I'm guessing that the allies see no hope in gaining control with the one state solution...

Palestine From Roman to Ottoman Rule

About 61 B.C., Roman troops under Pompei invaded Judea and sacked Jerusalem in support of King Herod. Judea had become a client state of Rome. Initially it was ruled by the client Herodian dynasty. The land was divided into districts of Judea, Galilee, Peraea and a small trans-Jordanian section, each of which eventually came under direct Roman control. The Romans called the large central area of the land, which included Jerusalem, Judea. According to Christian belief, Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem, Judea, in the early years of Roman rule. Roman rulers put down Jewish revolts in about A.D. 70 and A.D. 132. In A.D. 135, the Romans drove the Jews out of Jerusalem, following the failed Bar Kochba revolt. The Romans named the area Palaestina, at about this time. The name Palaestina, which became Palestine in English, is derived from Herodotus, who used the term Palaistine Syria to refer to the entire southern part of Syria, meaning "Philistine Syria." Most of the Jews who continued to practice their religion fled or were forcibly exiled from Palestine, eventually forming a second Jewish Diaspora. However, Jewish communities continued to exist, primarily in the Galilee, the northernmost part of Palestine. Palestine was governed by the Roman Empire until the fourth century A.D. (300's) and then by the Byzantine Empire. In time, Christianity spread to most of Palestine. The population consisted of Jewish converts to Christianity and paganism, peoples imported by the Romans, and others who had probably inhabited Palestine continuously.
During the seventh century (A.D. 600's), Muslim Arab armies moved north from Arabia to conquer most of the Middle East, including Palestine. Jerusalem was conquered about 638 by the Caliph Umar (Omar) who gave his protection to its inhabitants. Muslim powers controlled the region until the early 1900's. The rulers allowed Christians and Jews to keep their religions. However, most of the local population gradually accepted Islam and the Arab-Islamic culture of their rulers. Jerusalem (Al-Quds) became holy to Muslims as the site where, according to tradition, Muhammad ascended to heaven after a miraculous overnight ride from Mecca on his horse Al-Buraq. The al-Aqsa mosque was built on the site generally regarded as the area of the Jewish temples.

"Isratine" sounds like a product Crest or some other toothpaste company would come out with.

I heard that kind of thinking worked REALLY WELL when the west drew up the borders of Iraq. Seriously though, he's both right and wrong:
On one hand, the only way that Middle Eastern Jews and Muslims will coexist peacefully is if they learn to share the particular cities that are so sacred to them (e.g. Jerusalem).
On the other hand, the only way this would ever work is through a bottom-up approach, not a top-down, "We're going to force a government on you," approach.

In any case, we (as in, the US) need to extricate ourselves from the situation altogether, not get even more involved.

How about Syria Palaestina? Jerusalem could be re-named Aelia Capitolina, and the entire Temple Mount knocked down in favor for a temple to Jupiter.
