BIG News - Forbes has correctly identified that we will be the deciding factor of who the next president is.

Ron Paul And The Republican Crisis

The turnout at the University of Minnesota for the Feb. 5 Republican caucus was overwhelming—the almost-all-student crowd of over 300 packed two large classrooms for an event that, the facilitator said, had attracted fewer than 10 people in 2004.

But in what may be an ominous portent for the short- and long-term unity of the Republican Party, close to a third of these caucus-goers turned out to support Ron Paul. Statewide, 16% of voters cast their ballots for the maverick libertarian.

Of the 20 or so Paul supporters whom I interviewed at that event, about two-thirds said they would consider voting for a Democrat if Paul isn’t the Republican nominee.

If—and that's not a very uncertain "if"—Paul doesn’t win the Republican nomination, the eventual nominee will have to think hard about how to hold on to Paul’s supporters, who, by one estimate, make up about 6% of Republicans nationally. That’s a lot of voters, at least by the standards of the last two ultra-close elections, and depending on why they support Paul, many of them could find that they have more in common with the leading Democrats than with John McCain.

Paul may favor low taxes—a pillar of Republican ideology—but he also turns sharply away from his party’s positions on the war in Iraq and on some social issues. If, as my Tuesday interviews suggest, many of Paul’s supporters back him for his calls to leave Iraq, then it might not be reasonable for McCain to expect many of their votes in November.

This also introduces a broader challenge for Republicans. Could the party’s awkward coalition of libertarians and other sorts of conservatives crumble? Keep in mind that although Tuesday’s caucus was the first election event that many of my interviewees had participated in, they weren’t newcomers to the conservative scene, and they didn’t take their involvement with the GOP lightly. Many had Republican parents and grandparents—“all the way back to Lincoln,” as one said—and for the rising cohort of Republican partisans to support Paul and to consider voting Democratic suggests that the Republican Party is in for an identity crisis.

If Republican Party leaders figure out how to hang on to the Ron Paul crowd, they may end up owing gratitude to the Texas congressman, who in 2008 forced them to consider just who their supporters are.

...it might not be reasonable for McCain to expect many of their votes in November.
"Not be reasonable"? LOL That's an understatement! I grant of handful of Paul supporters may stupidly vote for mcdrain, just to keep a dem out of office, but the number would be so small as to not be worth mentioning.

If Republican Party leaders figure out how to hang on to the Ron Paul crowd....
For frack's sake it's not hard "to figure out": drop mcbrain like a bad habit!

Good article but why the heck has libertarianism become such a bad word to republicans? They used to believe in pretty much the same thing or they said so anyway.

Even the republican standard bearer, Ronald Reagan said this about libertarianism:

If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is.

The GOP doesn't WANT Ron Paul Republicans. They have done everything imaginable to alienate and marginalize Ron Paul and his supporters. They figure the control is now so complete, the leftist Neocon infiltration and takeover so entrenched that allowing any small government philosophy to influence the party would be a step backward from the GOP Left and Democrat Lefter matrix. RP obviously thinks the best hope is to wrest the GOP back from the Neocons and libertarianize it. Since the laws allow really only 2 parties he is most probably right unless an independent candidate runs who is so wealthy he can buy his own infomercials and ballot access. They are figuring we will get demoralized and go away, return to the apathetic mass leaving them to loot with impunity. Libertarians are by nature notoriously hard to organize, the Ron Paul movement has been something of a miracle. They don't expect it to survive Ron Paul.

Yaaah if Paul drops out i'm voting Democrat just to keep mr front lines foot soldier out of office. The dems may not be much better but at least they aren't bat shit crazy warmongers. Or so they say..

Just remember, as RP says, it was the republicans that were the ones traditionally elected to end wars.

it is simple the GOP does not care if they are losing all these votes. They are getting everything they want. If we vote in a Dem, they will stay in Iraq as well. If we vote in a Dem they will still borrow money from China. If we vote in a Dem they will still print money. So why would they care if they lose voters if the agenda is the same?

I will be writing Ron Paul in.

This whole thing plays out just the way the CFR wants it to. Democrats will be elected in a landslide, with a clear agenda to massively increase entitlements (Hillary called free health care a RIGHT today), which will further damage the dollar and will lead to a need to consolidate resources... "Canada, help us with our health care problem!"... hello NAU.

Don't forget the words of Aaron Russo quoting his "friend" Nick Rockefeller, "The goal is to sell socialism as democracy."

Doing a write in for Dr. Paul will have the same effect and is the course of action I would recommend as it would send a clear message to the neocons.

At the end of the National Convention, if Ron Paul isn't the Republican's choice then I will vote for the Libertarian candidate in the general election. Ron Paul will have been the LAST republican I voted for. So long, republican party, it was fun while it lasted.

Being a youngster, I have never in my life had a positive image of the Republican party. And frankly, what they are now is what I'm going to vote on, not what they "used" to do. I would definitely vote for a Dem if Paul drops out, but I think he would continue as an Independent or Libertarian. The way I see it, Paul would allow us economic and personal freedom. The Dems would allow a good deal of personal freedom and at least some economic freedom if they cracked down on the corporations that have been propped up by the State. The Repubs other than Paul would give us neither. The non-Paul Libertarians would give us neither because they won't be elected. I could hold my nose and say at least I get a half-good deal in the meantime before America wakes up or just be staunch and get a 0% deal, really, it's not much of a choice.

A Democratic win this election is inevitable anyway. Either Hillary or Barack will be the next President of the United States.

The RNC should be worried. I have voted in every election for over 20 years, the vast majority of the time voting straight party ticket(until 2006). My party used to believe in limited government, fiscal conservatism, personal accountability and responsibility for your actions, The Constitution, Law of the land so on so forth. I feel the party has let me down on almost every count. The Republicans have lost their way, in so doing they have lost me. I would rather see the party be destroyed then see it stay on it's current course (liberals in republican clothes). That is the reason I voted straight democrat for the first time in my life in 2006.

I loathe/despise/hate the socialist/collectivist ideology of the left, but the message had to be sent. This year I will only vote for 3rd party candidates(constitution and libertarian) and true fiscal conservatives. Ron Paul will be a write in for me, there is no other presidential candidate I will vote for.

To any party hacks from the RNC who may still be reading our boards I have a specific message for you. You fucked up and now you can fuck off!

A write in for Ron Paul will send a stronger message.;)
