Florida cops torture, kill man - no charges

Move the fuck out.

Our county sheriffs are right down the road. We live in the county, so we only get city cops out this way if they're with the feds.

Our sheriffs are good people. At least the ones who are in my township. They don't mess with anyone, and aren't overly aggravated and eager for a fight like the roided up cops are. They are also not loaded to the nines with fancy "fuck people up" shit. They have a car, but no crazy armored truck shit(at least not around here). I don't think most of em even wear a vest. Decent to me, so I've been decent to them.
Yep. I need to GTFO of phoenix for the same reason. Sheriff Joe=fail.

I agree with you there. Being in a smaller township means it's easy enough to actually meet the police. When a new deputy was recently posted they made a point to stop in each business just to introduce themselves, get to know the area. They're nice folks, actually helpful.

With that said the state police do seem like a different type of personality. I've even heard the sheriff deputies say that. I see these police brutality stories and wish everyone had sheriff departments like the ones around here.

Same County as this OP story. Happened today.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - I-75 shut down for several hours after a deadly shooting. It happened in the northbound lanes near the bayshore road exit in north Lee County.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office tells FOX4 one person was killed and a deputy was injured while trying to pull over a car full of people.

I-75 northbound not far from the Bayshore exit became an active crime scene late this afternoon. It was completely blocked off from traffic. According to the sheriff's office, a deputy pulled over a vehicle just after 4 pm.

"[The deputy] stopped, made contact with the occupants with the vehicle. At that point it turned violent." Sheriff Mike Scott said.

The sheriff's office not releasing specifics, but the driver of that vehicle was shot and killed.

A deputy also received injuries, however the sheriff's office not saying what those injuries are, but the deputy survived.

"No, just to say that he's injured and was transported to a local hospital." Sheriff Scott said.

Family members of the shooting victim showed up during a press conference, confronting deputies and the sheriff, looking for answers.

“What happened, what happened?”

There were multiple passengers in that stopped vehicle. But the sheriff's office says they are not looking for any suspects and have made no arrests.

"We're not looking for anyone, there is no one at large. We have everyone accounted for." Sheriff Scott said.

Scott says shots were fired. One deputy was injured, and a person inside the vehicle pulled over was killed.
How it all happened is unclear at this point, as those details are part of the ongoing investigation.

Hope like hell someone in that car had the mind to record the stop.

It's appalling that Sheriffs act in this manner. Like I've said, so thankful to have decent deputies in our county. Surprised still, but it's a pleasant surprise.

My theory is that the sense of control which comes with vastly expanded jurisdiction parameters yields a proportionately larger sense of power and untouchability, which then results in a detached sense of self-serving rule where there is no obligation to anyone except the department itself. This causes the police to become more aggressive and feel like they will never suffer recourse for their actions, allowing them to plow over anyone who resists their will. Only when a lawyer is brought into the mix are the police somewhat humbled. Other than that, they feel safe trying to get their way. Police who only have jurisdiction over a relatively small area are more attached to the communities in which they reside and, therefore, will be less inclined to do anything that might reflect poorly on them and their rule, since that might actually cause problems for their control in that area. The state police can't really be held accountable for what happens with a state police officer in a certain area because they are not directly responsible for what happens in that vicinity.
