So lets see. People are trying to become delagets. And doing so in trying to win the nomination. How is this a bad thing? If you want to go off of Ron Paul himself, hasn't he said multiple times that he wants as many delagets as possible? So now your telling people to move on from the nomination? That doesn't make sense. Delagets do a lot more then just elect the presidential canidate. They create the platform.
Exactly right Naga. There are other very worthy goals with pursuing the delegate process. But when people say things like "John McCain will NOT win the Nomination" is it just being irrational. But people are putting all of their eggs in one basket when we could be doing BOTH.
Our delegates have worked very hard and in some counties we've had some very inspiring victories. It makes us believe that using the process CAN actually work in the future. We may able to affect the party platform or change the "binding" rules for the next election (it is impossible to do it for this one). At the very least it would show the strength of our cause and resolve and would give us the essential experience for future elections. I almost can't wait for the next election knowing that we have so many supporters who have already gone through this process once and know what to expect. It is very exciting.
Yes, the chance of him becoming the nomination is SLIM TO NONE. I know that, I think most people know that.
Maybe most people DO know that, but some of these people are just wearing rose-colored glasses with a tin-foil hat on their head. They are completely out of touch with reality.
But seeing that there might be a chance, that is uplifting, you know why? Because we want someone we can vote for in this election, not next election, not the election after that. We want our voice heard.
We all feel the same way which is why we are here in the first place. But what will you do if he doesn't get the nomination AND because 100% of our time was dedicated to this, we don't have any Liberty Candidates to help get elected to Congress either? Then what?
And since the VERY beginning his chances of winning has been SLIM to NONE, so has the entire election been a waste? Of course not.
You're right. it isn't a waste. But that is because this campaign was NEVER about just getting Ron Paul elected. People continually forget that. Ron Paul wanted to wake up America and in large part he has succeeded.
...but I don't agree with everything Ron Paul believes in, and I definitely don't completely agree in everything the Republican platform is. So to me, "taking over" the republican party, isn't the best goal in my opinion. I think by making the revolution about the republican party it is alienating a lot of Ron Paul supporters. You have to remember, we have democrats that are part of this revolution. They don't have the same views for the government at the STATE level. Yes the State level governments can do what they want, they can be socialist and still follow the constitution. So in this regard, making the revolution 100% about the republican party, I disagree with.
A fair point. I'm NOT a Republican or Democrat. The fact that people identify themselves by these titles and NOT by ideals is the largest problem. But the Revolution has a 99% better chance of succeeding by taking over the apparatus that is one of the two main parties. Can it be done? Of course. The NEO-Cons took control of the traditional Republican party, why can't we take it back? Regardless of the preconceived notion of what a "Republican" IS.... we can make the party into whatever we want it to be. If Ron Paul had not run as a Republican this Revolution would have gone no where. Even though they were biased and dismissive of him, he was STILL able to use the platform to get his message out and many people found out about him because of it.
If Ron Paul ran as an Independent, and got 10% of the vote, who knows it is a lot but he could possibly get it I mean if he was up against McCain and Hilary, that would lay grounds for the possibility of a 3rd party/Independent run WINNING. The idea that only the 2 party system can win the general election is what makes our election process horrible. But a good showing a few elections in a row can change that. You don't have to win, just have to get a decent percent.
The problem is that running as third party makes the process SOOOOOOO much harder. Instead of fighting to get the message out, you are spending most of your time and resources just trying to get on the ballot and fighting to even be invited to the debates. If Ron Paul or some other Liberty candidate in the future won the Republican nomination, there is no way the media is not going to invite the candidate of one of the two major parties to the debate.
Then there is the issue of electability. People who still categorize themselves as Republican or Democrat are more likely to listen to and vote for a candidate from one of the two major parties rather than a third party. Traditionally, the mindset is that third party and independent candidates aren't REALLY running to win, they are just running to deliver a message. When you start adding up all of these obstacles, it just makes sense to take over the Republican party and transform it into the party that we think it should be (which we are already starting to do with the delegate process).
