Germany hardened its stance Thursday against Turkey over its military offensive against a Kurdish militia in Syria, which threatened to end a thaw in frosty relations between the NATO partners.Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel voiced "great concern" about Turkey's cross-border military incursion, called for NATO to discuss the situation and said Berlin would put on ice any weapons deals.
Most painfully for Turkey, he postponed for at least several months a request to upgrade German-made Leopard tanks which Ankara has deployed in its operation against the Syrian-Kurdish militia YPG.
Gabriel said Berlin and Paris were committed "to stopping a further escalation, to allowing humanitarian access and protecting the civilian population. That has top priority".
Germany is home to three million ethnic Turks and hundreds of thousands of Kurds, and tensions heightened by the military conflict have again spilled into the EU country.
Kurdish protesters brawled with Turkish air passengers at Hanover airport on Monday, while in the eastern city of Leipzig attackers smashed the windows of mosques run by the Turkish-controlled Ditib organisation.

[h=1]Turkey says U.S. has promised to stop arming YPG, warns Washington on Manbij[/h]
U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told Erdogan's spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, in a telephone call that the United States would no longer provide weapons to the YPG, the Turkish presidency said on Saturday.
"It was emphasized that Turkey's legitimate security concerns must be paid attention to. It was agreed that close coordination would be carried out in order to avoid misunderstandings," it said.
The agreement is likely to be seen by Ankara as a substantial diplomatic victory from the incursion, where Turkish troops and their Syrian rebel allies appear to have made modest advances, as heavy rain and poor weather have hampered air strikes and progress on the ground.
Turkey's foreign minister said the United States needed to follow up its promise with concrete action, including the immediate withdrawal of its troops from the vicinity of Manbij.
"The United States needs to break its link with (the) terrorist organization and make them drop their weapons completely. They need to collect the weapons they gave, they need to withdraw from Manbij immediately," Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters on Saturday.
The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment about ending arms to the YPG or exiting Manbij.

Turkey has detained more than 300 people for social media posts criticizing its military offensive in Syria, the government said on Monday, a day after President Tayyip Erdogan accused doctors who opposed the campaign of betrayal.
Since launching its 10-day-old air and ground offensive against the Kurdish YPG militia in Syria’s northwestern region of Afrin, Turkish authorities have warned they would prosecute those opposing, criticizing or misrepresenting the incursion.
The Interior Ministry said on Monday a total of 311 people had been held for “spreading terrorist propaganda” on social media in the last 10 days. Detainees have included politicians, journalists and activists.

MANBIJ

►Erdogan announced that following their Afrin operation,
Turkey’s military will target Kurdish groups in Manbij, where US soldiers are currently stationed in support of Kurdish YPG fighters,
and will continue further east towards the Iraqi border.

Kurdish military officers in Manbij commented on the Turkish operation in Afrin, Saturday:
“What we demand from the US, in particular, is to fulfill the promises to the SDF while they were combating terrorism, embodied by the Islamic State,
that is to protect the liberated areas, including Afrin, which, as we can see, has been fighting heroically and fiercely for seven days against the Turkish occupation, which is regarded as a foreign occupation.”

Al-Qaeda Joins Ranks with Turkey-Backed Forces Battling Kurds in Afrin

The Turkish army, its Free Syrian Army (FSA) allies and now the al-Qaeda have all joined ranks to attack The Kurdish fighters in Afrin,
according to reports by pro-militants and pro-government sources.

All reports – including those released by Ha'yat Tahrir al-Sham itself – suggest that the al-Qaeda affiliate
is operating in the mountainous countryside near the town of Dar al-Izza against the Southernmost flank of the Kurdish forces.

Kurdish sources reported earlier today that former ISIL members are also cooperating with the Turkish army
in Operation Olive Branch against the Kurdish militias in Afrin.

Due to this move by the Turkish military,
the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) advance to the besieged Shiite towns of Al-Fou’aa and Kafraya has been blocked.

The Turkish military has built a defensive line along the major roads to Kafraya and Al-Fou’aa,
which will ultimately infuriate the Iranian and Syrian governments.

According to Robert Fisk, reporting from on the ground in Syria, the city of Afrin hasn’t even been bombed by Turkey yet, while Turkey has been continuously threatening a grand offensive to retake the city. That’s because it’s Russia, not the U.S., that controls the airspace over the city of Afrin, and any incursion into Afrin would most likely need Russian approval. By Fisk’s research, if Turkey’s army wanted to take Afrin, it could do so in less than half an hour. So far, there have been signs of violence around Afrin, but not in Afrin itself. Indications are that Turkey is relying on its newfound proxy force instead, in the hopes of re-establishing a sizeable anti-Assad force of its own — one that can continue to fight for Turkey’s interests without compromising its position on the Kurdish question.
There’s a reason that Turkey is arresting journalists and critics of the invasion by the hundreds even as I type. With Western media relying on state-approved Turkish correspondents without the capacity for dissent, it is unlikely that those of us on the outside are getting the full picture. Fisk is most likely the only journalist on the ground who won’t be simply echoing Erdogan’s narrative, and already he has alleged that Turkey is conducting outright civilian massacres, not “surgical” strikes on “terrorists.”

Turkey-led rebel factions begin withdrawing from Afrin towards east Idlib to fight Syrian Army – reports
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...towards-east-idlib-fight-syrian-army-reports/

core units from certain Free Syrian Army factions heavily involved in the Turkey-led Afrin operation (code named ‘Olive Branch’) (FSA) are beginning to disengage from their current mission and withdraw towards the eastern countryside of Idlib
to fight pro-government forces now advancing on the province’s capital city.

(The warehoused 'collection' of Jihaddis all brought family & wives to Idlib City.... The SAA is approaching on a non-stop drive to take it over/back.

Syrian Army’s Tiger Forces end Idlib operation, head off to fight ISIS again
https://www.almasdarnews.com/articl...-idlib-operation-head-off-fight-isis-reports/

Preliminary reports suggest that the Tiger Forces will now be deployed to northeast Hama province
where they will lead other Syrian Army and allied paramilitary units in an operation to eradicate ISIS throughout the region.

ISIS forces with an estimated strength of at least 1,000 front-line fighters
currently maintain a rather large bastion in northwest Syria where they control nearly 100 towns and villages.

(In Assad's 'priorities' there is no 'rush' to 'finish' the job in Idlib jihaddi paradise.... Kurds fighting Turks over soil that belongs to neither
of them is an 'acceptable' condition for now.
'Pressure' is 'enough' at this point... If they 'take it'... they will have to 'hold it'... which is a 'waste' of fighting forces needed elsewhere.
Clearing out ISIS again becomes a priority again.)

A Russian Sukhoi-25 fighter jet has been shot down in a rebel-held area in Syria's north-western province of Idlib.
The Russian defence ministry said the pilot had ejected into an area believed to be controlled by the jihadist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham alliance.
Although he survived the crash he was killed in a ground fight, Moscow said.
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham - formerly linked to al-Qaeda - said it had shot down the plane.
