Dutch Reject EU-Ukraine Deal in Referendum [UPDATE: Dutch vote no, politicians ignore it

A clear majority of people who voted Wednesday in a Dutch referendum rejected a far-reaching European Union free trade deal with Ukraine, and with all votes counted it was clear that the threshold of 30 percent voter turnout would be met and the result would be valid.

The turnout was at 32.2 percent, broadcasters NOS and RTL reported after all votes were counted and reported by municipalities to national news agency ANP's election service.

While it was long in doubt if the result would be valid, the sentiment among those in the nation of 17 million who voted was crystal clear: According to the ANP count, 61.1 percent rejected the EU-Ukraine pact and 38.1 percent voted for it. The remaining votes were blank or spoiled.

...

In an interview earlier this year with a Dutch newspaper, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned that a "No" vote "would open the door to a great continental crisis."

Surprisingly CNN,BBC, CBC arent reporting the no Vote.
Now if this were a Yes vote you would be seeing a lot of news articles on it.

VICTORY IS SWEET.

Thanks !

The elites are scrambling and blaming anything and everything but themselves for their loss today.

It's great. :p

AWESOME !! Watching it now..

He correctly hints at the fact that this vote was on more or less the same treaty that started the Ukranian revolution.

I must say, lots of kudos to Ron Paul. I'm following these things pretty carefully and I must say Ron has a very good grasp of the facts. Amazing really how he can be up to date on so many different issues. (and yeah I know he has notes but still, you have to research all that stuff. EU stuff is rather complicated as well.)

I also like how they correctly identify Geert Wilders as slightly marginal. Which is true. I wouldn't vote for the guy. He's like Trump in my opinion, he says some things I agree with, he doesn't care about PC, but then some of his solutions are absolutely totalitarian... He calls his party the "freedom party". So yeah. [and just for laughs, he also has a hideous hairstyle]

Overall, this is a very good analysis.

Will the EU provide them with another opportunity to vote again, correctly this time?

Trust me, they'd get a worse outcome. That's the thing with the EU. They don't care about their image, they are too greedy with their power. Once people find out and realize, they don't change their opinion. No matter what EU propaganda has to say.

Oh and besides, it's non binding, so the government can do with it what they want. At their own peril.. Because the two governing parties WILL lose a LOT of votes if they neglect this outcome.

But should supporters of the remain campaign in Britain be quaking in their boots? Not necessarily.

The result is not a devastating victory for Eurosceptics. Neither is it the “continental crisis” that European grandees feared. This is not 2005, when Dutch voters turned out in far larger numbers to reject the EU constitution. Just under one-third (32%) of the electorate turned out to vote on Wednesday, compared with a 63% turnout in 2005. The campaign was lacklustre and lacked the political charge of 2005.

Moreover, comparisons between the UK and Dutch referendums are valid only up to a certain point. The latter came about because a satirical website, GeenStijl (meaning ‘no style’), allied with Eurosceptic campaigners, managed to gather enough signatures to force the government to hold a non-binding referendum on ratification of the EU-Ukraine agreement. (Under a Dutch law agreed in 2015, a referendum must be called if 300,000 voters sign a petition in favour).

Many Dutch voters objected to the poll and disliked the organisers. Some described it as a prank or a hoax and decided not to vote on principle. The worst-case scenario for the yes campaign seemed to come true: people who supported the association agreement and were broadly in favour of the EU didn’t turn out to vote. For others, the subject – a 2,135-page treaty partly in force – seemed confusing and obscure.

And turnout matters. The latest Eurobarometer opinion poll shows that 25% of Dutch people have a negative image of the EU, while 75% see it as positive or neutral. But Dutch voters with pro-European views stayed at home, while those who dislike the EU were motivated to turn out. This is the nightmare scenario for the British remain campaign: voters who want to stay in do not care enough to go out and vote.

The fact that it was non- binding may have reduced turnout compared to if it was a binding referendum.

I'm sorry Zip but I live around here and that's a load of shit. It's what is commonly said by the media. However it's not fact based.

The thing is.. Most people are not happy with what Europe is doing however a lot of people rather choose to continue than to put a stop to it. There's a wide range of opinions. Friends of mine for instance have a couple businesses, they really like the ease with which they can trade in the EU, so that's why they vote in favor of EU stuff (although they voted against this). I can understand their point of view and I'm in favor of the trade part of the EU.

Same with the currency.. If you ask people if in retrospect we shouldn't have taken up the EURO you'd probably get a majority that thinks that way.. Yet, most people are scared by politicians that returning to our own currency is dangerous.

The thing is... Most people really don't have a clue what's going on in Europe. Including the pro-EU side. It's soundbites and slogans that determine peoples opinions for the most part.

Yet. We've been paying billions. For what ? Many of our industries have been destroyed because we were too productive and the southern part of Europe has to be subsidized.

We're left with an economic mess.

So that's what's actually happening. Despite what media print, shit is not good.

Was it the French and the Irish they gave election do-overs to, for some treaty or other?

My memory dims.

The Irish, on the Lisbon treaty.

The Lisbon treaty was the establishments way to make the EU constitution happen without those pesky referendums.. They called it a treaty. Only Ireland needed a referendum by their constitution. They voted no and were told to vote again.

Thank you for sharing your own experiences.

No it actually is bullshit.

2005 was about A CONSTITUTION !!! IMAGINE THAT !!! VOTING ON A NEW CONSTITUTION ? No wonder the turnout was higher.

But Dutch voters with pro-European views stayed at home, while those who dislike the EU were motivated to turn out. This is the nightmare scenario for the British remain campaign: voters who want to stay in do not care enough to go out and vote.
Opinion polls have for months suggested the outcome, the only uncertainty was the turnout.

Just as a reference, this is how much people care about EU elections; (historic turnout)

1994 35,7%
1999 30,0%
2004 39,3%
2009 36,8%
2014 37,3%

Notice anything ? 2/3's of the population doesn't give a shit about anything.

The remaining third does. They voted NO. Plenty of no voters stayed at home as well. I know a couple people who would have voted no if they weren't as lazy or stupid as people who didn't vote yes to make a point. So arguing the yes vote stayed at home is ridiculous. Lots of people stayed at home. This is the result. DEMOCRACY. Deal with it.

Sure but there's only one party that is in favor of a binding referendum and there's no way in hell I'm going to vote for Geert Wilders...

So there's not going to be a binding referendum any time soon, those politicians would rather kill themselves than surrender such awesome power.

The article I posted suggested that Geert Wilders being behind it was one reason they didn't take it seriously. But we have no way of knowing what those who did not vote actually felt. That is true of any election. We only know the opinion of those who took the time to cast their ballots. You are right that many are willing to go along with the status quo- "don't disrupt my life!"

You don't even have a TV, how can you know all of this? I'm gonna have to go with Zippy on this one.

Hey, could you imagine having to show your passport if you went from one state to another in the US ? I can still remember having to show my passport inside the EU and then the next year just being able to drive on.. That was pretty amazing.

The thing with the EU is that it's problems are hidden. For instance, we have a bicycle path here that cost 3 million Euro. Paid for with EU subsidies. Not because anybody wanted it but because the subsidy was available and the local government would have been stupid not to take it. Now that the path is there... People like it. So even though they never wanted it, they don't realize it costs them money, so they like it.

But overall, more and more people are becoming eurosceptic and the media is getting more and more desperate. They didn't take us seriously so now they are losing their credibility.

We are even called anti-Europe. We're not. We are anti unelected bureaucrats usurping our sovereignty. More and more people are starting to understand that.
