ok so other than being able to look and tell a silver quater and other change from the ones they make today, how can you tell? are all ones made before a certain date silver or what?

Pre-1965

Pre-1965 US dimes, quarters and halves are 90% silver. Some other US coins contained lesser amounts of silver - certain nickels and 1965 halves. Silver dollars were ALWAYS mostly silver, but I think the amount varied at times.

But for purposes of acquiriing US silver coins as a hedge or possible underground currency, it is going to be mostly pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves because they exist in the greatest quantity and don't sell for a premium like silver dollars.

Go to coinflation.com it will tell you everything you need to know.

One note though, even though they say Eisenhower silver dollars were 40% silver that is mostly incorrect. Only the proof coins issued as part of mint sets contained the 40% silver. The majority in circulation have no silver.
