Does anyone here like ska?

lol I was just thinking the other day about how I had so many friends in high school get into ska, and how glad I am that its dead now.

At least I assumed its dead.

Then I find this thread....

Reel Big Fish is coming to Nashville this weekend and I can't wait. I haven't seen a good ska show since Orlando in 2001, and that was with the OC SuperTones.
I may have just gotten a date to the show by posting about it on Facebook :D

More details as they are available.... or not ;):p

SKA NEVER DIES!!!!

Was that Rock the Universe? The year Supertones and Five Iron were there?

If so, I was there as well, great show, although I'd put the FIF performance above the Supertones.

I use to be hugely into ska, and the St. Pete area provided as far as shows go. I've probably seen every major third wave ska band at least twice. I haven't listened to ska in a while although I still enjoy it.

Yeah I grew up in Orlando. I don't think that FIF and The SuperTones ever played RTU in the same year. I think the Tones did 2001 and FIF did 2002. I saw both performances and loved them both.

In 2004 I actually mixed for one of the artists there as I also did back in 2008 too. I'm an audio engineer.

Ska seems to be really hot (or used to be at least) in Florida and SoCal.

Saw RBF in Gainesville Florida several years ago and best of all it was free! Concert rocked!

Wikipedia says they both played in 2002, which was the last year RTU was good in my opinion - although that's just musical preference.

I saw FIF again in Orlando for the Winners Never Quit tour, amazing.

I think I've seen Catch 22 and Big D at least 5 times each. Every few months or so back in 2005ish they'd come.

The ska scene has kind of died down in Florida, at least within my age group (21) Back in highschool though it use to be pretty big. Constant shows, and a lot of local ska bands. I actually use to play bass for one, and my guitarist's brother use to be in a relatively successful local ska band called Chubby Tuff (they played with Catch 22, Planet Smashers, the Know How, and others).

It was a fun time, I wish all my old CD's weren't scratched to shit.

Yeah I always loved the RTU shows. FIF did a festival at the fair grounds in Orlando in 2003 I believe. I was moshing there and almost got my knee dislocated on the concrete floor... heh heh heh.... last time I ever moshed because I realized how dangerous it actually is :(

Less Than Jake came from Gainseville I believe. Do you remember the SpitValves?

I think I've seen the Spitvalves twice. The Know How is from Gainsville, I've seen them a few times. Supervillans is from the Orlando area.

The Ska is Dead tours were always a blast. I still have the original tour sticker on my car from when I was like 16.

I am a bit older and was a bit too young to go out to shows when ska was at it's peak (late 90's). But I wish I had been around for that, and the swing revival too. Horns are sexy and add flavor! :D

I just got back from the Reel Big Fish show in Nashville tonight. IT WAS AWESOME!

Packed the house, circle pits, moshing, skanking, and all the other gags, follies, and antics associated with that genre. It was one of the best shows I've seen in a looooooong time! If anyone sees Reel Big Fish playing within driving distance GO TO THE SHOW, you won't be disappointed!

Crazy story, I posted on my Facebook page that I liked RBF and a local girl I knew just cursory from RP's '08 campaign asked me to go with her. It was awesome not only to be with a girl who likes ska, but someone who is a self-described libertarian. She made friends with another girl there who just happened to be the lead singer's girlfriend. Next thing ya know we got invited to the afterparty with the band ha ha ha ha. It was a good night for sure!

I know Adam Birch, trumpet player from The Specials, but am not a ska fan. Not a hater either just not what goes in the music player.

Fun group. Thanks for sharing. And thanks for the Skatalites- one of the original ska bands. Can't forget them.
Most of the 80's ska bands were from England and featured mixed race musicians- at a time of racial tensions. They also wrote a lot of songs about the problems of the time. And some were just about fun.

This should get you moving- Bad Manners How can you not have fun with something like this (and their lead singer?)
