I helped out at the Ron Paul table from from 4:30 until 9:00, it was an awesome experience. It was great to talk to all the fellow Ron Paul people. I would say we had over 10 to 15 people there the entire time.
We almost ran out of District 1 delegate sheets (explaining who our candidate was), but there was a volunteer that went out and made a ton of copies and got back just as we ran out. The official campaign guy actually was digging through the trash, because we almost ran out at the end. He is definitely a Ron Paul supporter, no one can ever question this man on his allegiance.
I showed up with a case of water, and slim jims. We had a bunch of signs people took. Someone brought buttons, I gave my button to a supporter I converted. The only thing we had left were slim-jims.
For awhile we had a huge contingent of people outside the doors of the building holding signs and talking Paul up before people entered. They were also giving out the RP slate. Then you would hit those Pro-Life/Family people, then a McCain person and finally we had a table at the beginning of the hallway leading towards the voting room. I would hit people up right before they were about to enter. "Do you have a list of delegates?" I was really surprised by the number of people who only talked about Pro-Life. In order of the amount of times I said them here are the bullet points: I was constantly having to mention the Jane Roe endorsement, Married to his wife 50 years, Dr. OBGYN, Pro-Life pro life pro life, Paul was only candidate to visit LA, bring our troops home, America First!
Really surprised by the Pro-Life, didn't know it was a #1 issue to so many people. There was a church bus drop, I am sure for Huckabee, they stormed by the Paul booth on a mission. None of them would talk to us. I would talk to people right before they got to the first door to enter and Romney table. Other people were tired of being handed things. 3/4 of the people I tried to hand a list to took it, 1/2 of that would actually want to talk about Paul. I saw LSU hats and I mentioned the Huckabee hating on LSU to maybe 10 people. One girl had her mom in toe, her mom had no opinion. The girl thought Ron Paul's stance on family was weak. I explained leaving the decision to the state's on whether to ban gay marriage. I said the federal government would be stretched to thin to have a homosexual police. She was like that isn't enough... why do people want a Homo Squad fed department? I was just dissappointed that these feel good fringe issues were so huge. Pro-Life, Pro-Family, I could at least talk the talk for them.
To our avid supporters: Ron Paul is not going to abolish the IRS right away. He is going to get us on the path to getting rid of it. He needs congress' help it will be a long progress but we can make it happen. Don't just say abolish IRS and act like a person is stupid "You've heard about the IRS right, Ron Paul wants to abolish it!: This lady standing by me was very pushy, I think I had a few people thinking long and hard about Paul until she butted in. Also if a fellow Paulite is talking to someone don't keep throwing things in there, people feel attacked if more than 1 person talks to them. We only had one other person shouting and carrying on about conspiracy theories outside the building. Luckily these two people only stayed for 2 hours or so. We still got a lot of votes!
The Romney people were the last table and they were set-up right after the first door to enter the voting room. They had people congregating around their area, but we had a huge amount of people show up.
My comments about the Pro-Life/Pro Family people. Everyone is saying they are Thompson/Huckabee/Rudy supporters. I'm going to go post my thoughts and experiences over in the Winning LA forum, I just wanted to say those uncommitted people were dressed nice. I talked to all of them almost at the Pontchartrain Center (District 1). I didn't realize it at the time, but one guy said he liked Thompson, another kept mentioning Huckabee. However none of them mentioned JulieAnnie, in fact the ones I talked to hated Julie. They just said they were uncommitted and wanted a candidate who was Pro Life/Pro Family. They seemed very genuine about it.
I talked to them for awhile. Told them about Ron Paul and how he is very pro-life, mentioned the Roe endorsement. They all liked Paul, and said if they won they would consider voting for him. They said they wanted to become a strong group of delegates who could be swayed to the strongest Pro-Life candidate. I told them I would send our Ron Paul delegation to visit them at the state convention if they made it. They were nice people, and I hooked them all up with a bottle of water. Maybe I planted a seed!
My other comment is that people need to focus on serious issues. Not Pro-Life Pro-Family, come on our men are dying, or dollar sucks. It was frustrating how many people thought Pro-Life was #1 problem in the country.
