[Disputed] Rand Paul brushes off Gary Johnson at FreedomFest

Anyone else find it ironic that Rand has pledged to support Donald (the RNC candidate) over the libertarian candidate who is nearly polling 15% and very close to making the debates?

If Rand truly believed in liberty and truly planned on term-limiting himself as he has promised to do, wouldn't he come out strong for Johnson knowing this is his last term as Senator and just disavow his position on abortion? Of all years for the Paul's to not support the libertarian candidate, they choose this year when the candidate may have a shot?

Sure, if he didn't mind risking losing his Senate seat. I don't think he wants out of politics entirely yet. That would be a risky move in an election year. Not that GJ/CFR Weld is any great ticket though, just more controlled opposition. I'm sure Rand knows that.

They will not let GJ into the debates. That was never a possibility.

Knowing Rand, he will likely vote for GJ, but that is of course unknown to anyone but himself.

No. A lot of us on this forum wouldn't come out strong for Johnson if you paid us.

No, since Rand signed a pledge (the same one the other Republican candidates did) to support the party's nominee long before he knew it would be Trump, or knew who would be the Libertarian nominee/what the poll numbers would be.

This does not make sense, as Rand is term limiting himself to two terms, not one, meaning that the present term is not necesariiy (indeed, is hopefully not) his last, and the electoral damage of supporting Johnson would weigh on him in the present election he is running, not a hypothetical future quest for a third term (which, as you note, he says he will not seek).

Yeah, Rand signed a pledge, and it's good that he's honoring it. It wouldn't be good for him to wind up like Cruz or Kasich, who went back on their pledge and may well stir enough resentment to get kicked out office (especially if Hillary narrowly wins). Rand also backed Romney, and even campaigned with him for at least one event, so it would look pretty silly to join the #NeverTrump poison.

Honestly, he really has to be regretting the pledge. Perino is sorta right, if Rand had gotten out of the GOP early and run for the LP slot, he would be getting all of nevertrump, most of the disaffected cruzies, and with that, probably a podium at the debate. But nobody really knew what was going to happen.

I imagine part of the reason Gary has been so promoted is because he picked a CFR goon like Bill Weld to be his VP, I would hope that Rand wouldn't sell out like that and he comes across as a better man than Cruz/Kasich/Bush because he honored his pledge.

Ron Paul has not endorsed the GOP Presidential nominee since 1980 and this year is no different. He has on occasion endorsed, and even ran himself as the Libertarian Presidential nominee, but only when they were worthy. What about Gary suggests he is worthy of Ron's support? His belief that government should compel Jews to bake cakes for Nazis? His support of managed trade agreements? His belief that religious liberty is a "black hole"? The fact that he chose a gun grabbing, neocon as his running mate?

What about Ron Paul's forty years in public politics would lead you to conclude that he'd put electoral viability above ideology?
