Dana Milbank: Standing with Rand, nervously

His LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION bill flies in the face of the suggestion that Rand can pull Democrats from Hillary-or-whoever.

you probably wont hear much about it from Rand if he was in a general election as he's savvy enough to know what to do.

I don't think so. It's one out of 100 issues. Most people aren't one issue voters who are going to base their vote for a politician on one issue. Ronald Reagan was elected President on a platform of banning all abortions except when the life of the mother is in danger, and the American people weren't any more pro life back then than they are now.

Dana Milbank penned a column that was not a garden variety total disparaging of someone with the last name Paul.

(looks out window to see if pigs are flying; checks compass to see if the earth has stopped spinning).

It wasn't without the usual jabs (need to put those in there so the cocktail club doesn't think you're going soft), but, ok! Come on in for the big win, Dana!

As to imagining that Rand will not be backed into the corner of HAVING to talk about his (right-of-right, religious, extremist, futile, pick yer adjective) LIFE BEGINS AT CONCEPTION bill...or having his pointed evasion allow people to assume/spin the worst...kindly recall The Newsletters. People will ASK HIM, on camera.

...if he was in a general election as he's savvy enough to know what to do.

He FIELDS questions better than his guileless father. Does that mean he learned his lesson when he stepped in Civil Rights shit on Maddow, or does that mean Rand HAS guile?

He's already backed off of his support for having a ban on all abortions. Now the hard part will be trying to withstand the accusations by Rick Santorum in the GOP primaries that Rand isn't pro life. That will be tougher for Rand than winning a general election.

I think he's very good at getting attention put it that way. In 2009 no one knew who he was and he couldn't get on Fox or CNN so I suspect he went on Madcow because MSDNC love to have a libertarian to kick around. The one thing it did accomplish is that it got him attention and people talking about him and he was on a national cable TV show which makes him seem more credible regardless of what he was saying. You'll notice he's not been back on MSDNC for years and that's good.

Santorum will not be a factor and has not held office for 9 years by then! Rand can tell Iowans that he is pro-life and has a bill much like he can tell neocon hawks in the media that he voted for sanctions on Iran. He's neutralized any potential attacks.

Santorum voted for Planned Parenthood funding. From a practical standpoint, doing that is worse than fighting over exceptions about the life of the mother.

If Rand is playing for RICK SANTORUM'S supporters, first, EWWW. Second, there aren't as many Rick Santorum supporters as there are Swing Voters to alienate by being aligned with Rick Santorum supporters.

I know, I know, he "has to" kiss Hardright ass to get the nomination...so he can lose the general election.

I think there should be an exception for the life of the mother, but when Rand said that there should be "thousands of exceptions" to a ban on abortion and used pro choice rhetoric about decisions being made between a woman and her doctor, that was unsettling to me. He's going to have to stand strong on that issue in order to get my support. He can deviate on other issues that I disagree with him on and I'll still support him, but I won't support him if he doesn't take a clear stance on this issue. I don't know if I could support any of the other candidates either due to their foreign policy views. Perhaps I would just have to join the Constitution Party and try to grow that party.

I think Rand's thousands of exceptions and his rhetoric just had to deal with all of the different health issues that could come up during a pregnancy.

The point is SQUARING OFF against Hillary.

Newt Gingrich is many icky things, but stupid is not among them.

She's not unbeatable especially when the economy is in the toilet after Obamacare... which she supports.

The party out of the White House 8 years tends to win next time.

Hillary is not unbeatable in either a Democrat primary or a general election if she makes it out of the primary.

Any clown with a -D behind their name will get the votes from the majority of the -D's. Many are just drones and follow their leaders....

Newt has been wrong about a lot of things. He was thrown out of Congress by his own party. I bet he never saw that coming in 95.
