Daily Rasmussen - Paul down to 3% nationally

We're going to be haunted by the skeptics until the end. Any time I talk about ending Equal Opportunity or killing government college tuitions, I get fought until my face begins twitching too violently to coherently speak. Libertarian ideas seem to be viewed as cold and heartless, with the worst intentions possible, and skeptics will look for any wound to stick their fingers in.

If Ron Paul loses, I elect the surplus donations are given to the Libertarian Education project, with the mass-sending of "Atlas Shrugged" to high schools. Dr. Paul himself said we aren't far enough along as a country for his ideas... Whatever he's proven, we need to keep the ideas that Paul planted in people's minds alive.

That statement is disingenuous, and it was when it came out of Ron Paul's mouth, too. Paul supports policies that are color-blind, but the writers of his own newsletter were bigots. Haven't you known libertarians who didn't like certain kinds of people? I know I have.

Ron Paul believes in liberty. There is a reason some white supremacists support him. It isn't because he is a racist, it is because he believes in letting people discriminate in their own private affairs. We all discriminate in one way or another, not necessarily on account of race, but EVERYONE is discriminating.

We don't need to worry about the libertarian vote. We already have it. We need to recruit NEW followers. If you don't understand how badly this newsletter thing will damage this campaign, then you don't understand the American voter. You might hold the average voter in disdain, but we still NEED their votes.

I agree we need NEW votes. The loss of some libertarians just demonstrates how damaging this is. I think there is a lot of denial going on here.

McCain new leader and Giuliani joins us in single digits.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday now shows John McCain narrowly on top in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination. It’s McCain 22%, Mike Huckabee 20%, Mitt Romney 20%, Fred Thompson 11%, and Rudy Giuliani at 9%. Ron Paul attracts 3% support.

New national polling data released today shows that just 13% of Americans believe Congress is doing a good or an excellent job. A separate survey shows that 57% want troops brought home from Iraq within a year.

Yup, doesn't make sense. People are blind to the solution.

I have to point out that the people being polled are largely in the 43% that doesn't really care about the war, just so long as they see the US as "kickin' @$$!" Sure, they may oppose the war, when things are going badly for US, but when our kill count goes up and our casualty count goes down, they couldn't really care less about the principle of non-intervention.

Wasn't Hookerbea up to around 40% at one point in national polls? If he can move down 20% in a matter of weeks(?), we can move up 20.

He was at like 2% and then came from behind in late October, or was it early November.

Giuliani used to be up at like 1/3, which is the maximum any Republican has gotten, and his lead dissipated as soon as Huck surged into "top tier" status.

There is denial, and there has been on many levels. Many people here don't understand that while we think that Ron Paul did great in the debates, most Republicans think he is simply WRONG. And the other candidates (for the most part) encourage that thinking by treating Ron as if he is a half-wit numbskull.

We get upset at this treatment by the other candidates, but it seems like many of the people on the forum don't understand that the candidates are doing it for a reason: it WORKS. After all, they are the first tier candidates (sarcasm) and people actually DO believe that if these first tier candidates think Paul is off his rocker, then he probably is.

Everyone, get off your behinds and sign up as precinct leaders and work the streets for Ron Paul. Only when our neighbors understand that there actually ARE people supporting Ron Paul will many people consider voting for him.

The majority of the people in this country don't think like we do and castigating them for it won't get votes. Stress Paul's fiscal conservatism, opposition to gun restrictions and the income tax, anti-abortion stance . Emphasize the things that Republicans like and don't talk about the other stuff unless they bring it up.

You have to take into account the statistical margin of error. Putting faith in a poll with a one percent drop is nonsense.

Do you think Ron Paul should focus his campaign in a certain state to try and win a state and therefore become a more viable candidate. This for instance worked for mccain in new hampshire. The media was counting him out but since his win in new hampshire he has once again become a front runner. Do you think Ron Paul should employ this same strategy?

The media told everyone that McCain was going to win New Hampshire before they even voted.

Please this discussion should be taken some where else. Who cares what the mass media is saying. Everyone gets smeared with the RACE Card, take a look over at the Obama Hillary race, we have to continue to move forward, if people buy into that bull shit, they deserve the government they get. Doubt, that is the seed they want to plant, it won't grow in this space. So vote with who ever you beieve in, take a look at what the other guys are selling. Either you are in or out. Go to his ronpaul2008 campaign page, read his voting record, learn about him. It's your call, but don't plant a garden in here. Sorry, but little time, big job.

I agree that libertarianism is incompatible with racism but nonetheless there is no denying that the newsletters have hurt. I personally do not believe RP has a racist bone in his body. I have followed Ron Paul's career since his 1988 campaign and I have never seen him say or write these type of things. However take a look at Reason's Hit and Run comments and you will see many libertarians that have had their confidence shaken. I bring this up because if the hard core base begins to waffle then what does the story do to the gen pub or those new to "the movement"? I think the Rasmussen poll answers that question.

Agreed. I belong to a forum that leans very libertarian in general. The newsletters HAVE affected support, unfortunately.

The masses now openly show hate for Ron Paul..it used to be a simple brush off as a kook. But now they have ammo to continually throw real insults his way and tell people that he is a nutcase, nazi, racist, anti-American etc... I now see people OPENLY saying those things now over and over again.

The campaign is DONE...DONE over DONE and DONE. The amature response to this and the storm front issue has ruined it.

Ron Paul had to be MORE than they did to win...he had to be PERFECT and UNASSAILABLE. He could not afford to have any faults at all, because they will ROAST him with all their powers.

The public will never give him a chance now, because they will have seen too many people in the media openly display their hated of Ron Paul and will never give him the time of day. No one wants to be associated with him now.

I give up. I just hope the long term damage is not that bad to the libertarian, constitutional movement.

The media told everyone that McCain was going to win New Hampshire before they even voted.

This is the root of our entire problem in this election.

The public lets the media make their decisions for them, with most voters not even giving a shred of critical thought.

That, and the republican mentality of "who has the best chance of beating whoever the Dem nominee is".

To most voters, this is just a sporting event and they're cheering for their "team".

It's so sad.

MI needs Prison Reform, STOP DOPING THE POPULATION DOWN! A Swing door ad that let's the killers out of jail with some candidates plan, then show RON SWINGING BOOKS INTO THE PRISON, EDUCATE The Prison population instead of Failed Mental Health DRUGGING of Prisoners, making them worse when their time is served. They are doing time, not lab rats that come out worse then when they went in putting innocent people at risk when they are released. Prisons THE BREEDING GROUND I think that is a msnbc show. Do you ever see the mass media selling of those prison inmate shows, and prison escape, hunting down human beings as entertainment, I wonder who watches those shows anyway?

Huck an injection should love that kind of add in MI. Foster care is also totally corrupt in MI.

I know. If everyone voted based on who they thought was most aligned with their own issues, rather than who they thought could get elected so they could "vote for the winner," we might have a much different government. This sentiment is exactly what gives the media the power it has today.

It's a shame the Democrats shed Biden, Richardson, Gravel, and probably soon Kucinich. I don't agree with Democratic stances, but those are some good Democrats.

The topic is about why we are dropping in the national polls. I think the recent negative attention is a factor and is relevant to the discussion.

The campaign would benefit from bringing in more Pros bottom line not only to deal with this sort of media smear but many things. We must care what the major media is saying because unfortunately that is where most voters are deciding who is viable. And yes as someone said we must walk our precincts especially as your state comes up in the primary schedule. Face to face time and professional PR people to turn the negative stories like this around and otherwise "mold" the message is just part of modern campaigns.

The dismal poll numbers along with the newsletters would have been crushing for me a week ago. That was before I saw Paul kick ass yesterday.
