Civil War 2? Many Voters Think It’s Likely

The possibility that America could face another civil war soon is not too far-fetched for a lot of voters.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 41% of Likely U.S. Voters believe the United States is likely to experience a second civil war sometime in the next five years, including 16% who consider such a scenario Very Likely. Forty-nine percent (49%) don’t think another civil war is likely in the next five years, including 20% who say it’s Not At All Likely. Another 10% are not sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Such discussions got a boost after the new movie “Civil War” made its debut as No. 1 at the box office last month. Thirty-seven percent (37%) of voters believe another civil war is more likely to happen if President Joe Biden wins this year’s election, while 25% think another civil war is more likely if former President Donald Trump wins. Thirty percent (30%) say who wins this year’s election will not make much difference in the likelihood of a civil war.

The survey of 1,105 U.S. Likely Voters was conducted on April 21-23, 2024 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research.

It won't be a shooting war. The US could have something like the troubles in Northern Ireland.

Troubles estimates over 30 yrs 3600 dead , 30K wounded .Probably more wounded be my guess

ANOTHER civil war? When was the previous one? What happened in the 1960's was close, but never really made it to fruition. And what happened a century earlier, in the 1860's, was a war between the federated states and rebelling states. A civil war is when you have to worry about being in a neighborhood that's a couple of miles away from you, particularly at night. A civil war is when you stop taking vacations by car because you worry about the localities you might have to pass through. A civil war is when a guy heads home from a pub after having a couple with his friends and never makes it home and is instead found face drown in a ditch the next morning, leaving his 11 year old son as the breadwinner of the family - as 69360 points out:

The gun laws in Northern Ireland are much different than those in the US. So no, it WILL be a shooting war in the US. The difference is that there won't be identifiable lines of combat as there were in what was loosely called the American Civil War. Instead, it will appear as increased levels of lawlessness in adjacent neighborhoods that have ideological or ethnic differences.

The 11 year old, that I mentioned above, was my grandfather. His father was assassinated by the IRA in Belfast. When I asked him about it, late in life, he answered:
We're not going to talk about that. Never ask me again. I won't teach you the hatred. It dies with me.
... which is why I took the time to respond. Don't teach the hatred; you won't like where it leads (even less than you like where we are right now).

Another benefit of diversity: far from the battle lines, due to ethnic and religious enclaves hostile to the native population and government, everybody will be able to play in the Patriot Games.

And by unilaterally disarming, in a cultural way, look at where Ireland is now.

In another twenty years there will be no more Ireland or Irish.

There is a time for all things, including a time to hate.

How were The Troubles not a shooting war?

By my definintion it was not. There were not two conventional armies doing large scale battles for territory.

I think what happened there then is possible now in the US, but a full scale civil war will not happen.

Fair enough, it was a guerilla war.

I bet the age breakdown of this poll is hilarious.

Too bad it's paywalled
