To start this off, I'm just saying that this is a defense for the blimp. A lot of the RP community is upset with the complications that the blimp has run into. Generally I hear "oh no! it took too long to get up," or "oh no! it only has one banner" or "oh no! it's in SC and not Boston!" etc etc. I'd just like to address your concerns and place my own view on their strategic decisions.
...And yes, Boston is a good idea from the long view. With the tea-party in Boston, it would be gimmicked and themed very well and the press would have fun with it.
Unfortunately, it's not realistic and it's not exactly the best tactical move either right now.
- For one, the weather is apparently absolute crud up in Boston and will be for the weekend... The last thing we need right now is the blimp going down in flames... and that making the news.
- The weather is also quite a bit WARMER down south... This means that people will actually be outside to see the blimp. Up in Mass., I'm sure there are a lot of people who are in huddle mode this time of year.
- The Primaries are actually in South Carolina... Did you all forget that the primaries are in LESS than a month and South Carolina is one of the first places AND he just posted 11%!!! in a poll there?? We need that blimp in SC to help push him over top.
- The places the blimp will hit in SC are key locations. (South of Charlotte area is political, Greenville is big, Columbia is huge). This places could use the love from Ron Paul. Modern South Carolina (note I said 'modern' ;-) ) has a lot of ideals in general in common with Ron.
- It's gonna be fantastic press. I mean let's face it. It's a blimp... and it's up in the air... we payed for it... and only in about a week after it was payed for.
- We don't look as kooky. If we did do the Boston thing, we might come across like we're only about gimmicks. Heading to SC shows that we actually care about the campaign's future and the voting process included. (which... again SC = HUGE PART).
In short, I hope you all see the pattern. The Blimp staff has made an intelligent, justified and tactically sound decision. I mean it's only JUST THIS WEEKEND. They'll get the other banner in on monday (which I read somewhere, someone else can confirm) and all will continue as planned.
I for one, am really satisfied with it's progress, and I'd like a hear-hear from anyone else who feels the same way
!
