Cutting A Gum Wrapper In Half Is A Survival Technique That Everyone Should Know

That is pretty  . However, I think I'll just stick with my solar parabolic mirror cigarette lighter and collected dryer lint for tinder for starting my survival fires. My portable Zippo flint and steel kit also works pretty well too at generating sparks.

In the comments I learned this is called a "prison lighter".

I'm so hot that anything I touch ignites a spark.

I always thought that the series "Walking Dead" should have had different characters showcase different survival skills. This would have been a good one for Eugene Porter to have pulled out.

That would've been something Daryl's brother would've known. It's called a "prison lighter" and I think his character spent time in prison.

Good point. Speaking of points, didja know....Cutting the lead out of a pencil and sticking it into positive terminal of an outlet will light your cigarette? How do I know? Someone that did 90 days in the hole.

Might be burnt or blow a fuse. Sheesh....do like Ronin and Google it. I've always figured that I have a Bic or a Zippo on me at all times. I smoke tobacco.

So, since I don't chew gum or carry batteries very often I'm kinda screwed. Guess I'll keep lighters handy instead.

LOL...You guys never watched "orange is the new black"...LOL...Or you'd know how to light a cig in prison...

That's pretty cool! I knew about steel wool and D batteries but this is the first time I've seen this one.

I think the point is to have as many options as possible. It's great to have a "bug out bag" with your favorite survival gear, but if you somehow find yourself separated from it (lost, stolen, whatever) it's good to be able to make do with what you find.

You know, this would be cool in a video game. Lot's of games have "crafting" built in these days, but imagine a game where players "crafted" things that would actually be useful in the real world in order to advance?

Another good idea is to learn to make a fire-steel, or striker. The forging is easy, but the heat treat can be tricky. This seems a decent video on the process.
