If you are at someone else's house for a party, and their dog attacks you, it doesn't matter if it's their property, you have every right to defend yourself from the dog, even if it means killing it.

Unless the dog happens to be a police officer.

I don't think I'll ever understand how any animal could have the same rights as, or more, than a human.

How do you feel about police dogs?

I know somebody who is currently serving time for killing a police dog. He didn't commit any crime, but a dog was released on him. He ran, because a big fucking dog was chasing him. The dog got his arm. He stabbed it with the screwdriver that was in his other hand, and killed it. I don't blame him a bit... I most likely would have done the same thing. When there's a dog trying to rip your arm off it's just instinct to defend yourself.

The only crime he was charged with was killing a police officer. I don't know if it's the same everywhere, but here killing a police dog is considered the same as killing a police officer. I think that's bullshit... it's a dog.

I know of somebody else who was almost killed by a police dog. An alarm went off at night at the building she worked at. She was called to the building because she had a key, and was to let the police in to check it out. She unlocked the doors, and it appeared to be a false alarm, so she used the building's phone to call her husband and let them know what was going on.

A police on the other side of the building released a dog. The dog attacked her, and did some major damage before the police caught up to it and called it off. She was rushed to the emergency room, had some major surgery, and got over 600 stitches from the bites all over her body. She was offered some major hush money, she took it, and it never made the news.

You can train a dog as much as you want, but that doesn't make it a police officer... it's still just an animal.

Damn. That sucks to be both those people. And I agree that a police dog is a dog and should be treated as such. Killing one should not be the same crime as killing a human being.

But guess what? A crime was not committed by the woman or her dog in this situation. If a stranger unexpectedly ventures on my property and gets bitten by my dog the dog is just protecting my property. It is unfortunate that the person was bitten. But it seems pretty clear that the officer was acting as judge, jury and executioner. Was he going on the person's property to interview the dog or measure the size of his jaws? Give yourself a break.

All the real-life experiences you referenced happened at least 20 years ago, since you say they happened while you were a teen and you say you are 40.

That's to be expected.

20 years ago, police could do a lot more than they could now, and get away with it.

That's what I find terribly ironic, people here call for the "good old days" where there was "no police abuse", but the reality is, back then, police abused their powers much more and could get away with it. Another officer told me the story of this one cop, who's now deceased, who made it a game beating up black people for fun back in the 70's. He could get away with it, his department didn't even care, fact the chief probably even encouraged it. Wouldn't be surprised if he also sold drugs, just like the example you gave.

Stuff like that just wouldn't fly today.

I'm 50/50 on that one. I haven't worked K9 yet and have no plans, I'm not really an animal person.

You are correct, police dogs are considered to be officers themselves, and killing them is a felony, just as killing a police officer is. Usually when they die, they also have a ceremony just like a fallen officer would have. There is a great deal of respect for police dogs, and their handlers in the K9 unit look at their dogs like family. Countless number of times, the police dogs have saved the lives of the officers, even many times giving their own life for their human companions. And they do it out of pure love and compassion, not because that is how they are trained.

However, personally, and other cops would be agitated at me for saying this, but at the end of the day they are still dogs. I don't really think they should be legally considered officers and carry the same penalties. Ceremony for the fallen police dog, that's still fine. But sending someone to prison for life for killing a police dog? Sorry I'm just not an animal person and this is my opinion.

In fact, out of the 50 some police departments in my county, I'm pretty sure mine and two others are the only ones that wear black uniforms. The rest wear brown ones, and the state police wear gray.

Oh, so you make judgment calls on who you will chase based on assumptions of guilt. Sounds discriminatory to me. I would think it is your job to chase suspected criminals whether someone stole a candy bar from a baby, or murdered an official in cold blood. What you have described above is neither impartial, nor constitutional.

Perhaps the officer should have knocked on the front door and presented a warrant. That is what the police used to do. Police officers used to also understand that people were innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Dogs protect their masters and their turf. You of all people should know that. What are you implying here? That, people, even innocent people, need to understand that their dogs might be murdered by power-happy police at any time. Even on their own property?

So, when cops injure civilian dogs, dogs are mere property. But when civilians injure police dogs, dogs are police officers.
