Conservatives Are Already Freaking Out About Jeb Bush's Possible Run For President

I for one think it would be pretty fucking sweet to see Bush and Clinton run against each other, simply for the media narratives it would spawn.

Is this thread about Jeb Bush or Multiplication? I'm confused.

Feel like I'm in school and instead of government class I just realized I'm in the wrong room and this is math. Can I get a hall pass?

box:

Code:
 12
x34
------
300
 60
 40
  8
------
408

As for the multiplication, I guess I instinctively do it in a box kind of way in my head... although I'd never heard of the box method.

I round one of the numbers to the closest multiple of 10 because that's easy, and then add or subtract the rest.

So for this one I'd make it 34x10 first, and then do 34x2.

Code:
 12
x34
------
340
 68
------
408

But, this thread demonstrates that different people are comfortable doing it different ways.

Seems like teachers should help kids figure out which way works for them. As long as they arrive at the right answer and can show how they got there it shouldn't matter what method they use.

We never used any of those methods for multiplication. It was simpler to just memorize multiplication tables. Where most schools would do that up to 12, we did it up to 1000.

There's no difference between those two methods except the way they are shown in this particular diagram. It's the same method illustrated differently.

yeah, I don't know wtf they are doing in the "long form" version in the graphic above. what with all the arrows and twists and crap. looks to me like they are trying to make the "old" way look difficult in order to convince people that their rebranded "new" way is actually an improvement.

Mainly they're trying to make it more difficult and frustrating for parents to take an active role in their kids' educations. And, of course, make those same parents look stupid in the eyes of their kids.

Long you start at the right, Box you start at the left. Box can be incredibly fast with quite complex functions.

I fail to see how that makes a difference. The same exact sub-operations are occurring. Why should it matter what order you add them in?

WTF??? LMAO

Damn, I let my federal legislators enforce my little nieces and nephews learn how to multiply like that????

Is there any proof this is a more effective method of education?

Its been a method of teaching globally for a long time. You can do big stuff fast, but its just a mental short cut. Long form should be taught alongside it for paper work.

I learnt from this guy about 20 years ago, been going fast ever since:

Skip to 13:40 for the good stuff.

Going from the left is a lot more natural. The brain just like it more so you can go a lot faster when multiplying a bunch of multi-digit numbers together.

Going from the right is a lot tidier on paper and should be used when you want to show your working.
