Conservatives Are Already Freaking Out About Jeb Bush's Possible Run For President

I've long been able to do 3 digit times 3 digit multiplication in my head since 2nd or 3rd grade; I naturally (without ever having been taught) use a mental box method, not a mental long form:

123
x456
---------
40000
8000
5000
1200
600
1000
150
120

Gosh, could it be the over-the-top corporate propaganda push these past couple of weeks that has made it so?

People have learned to see these things coming. Can't fool all of the people all of the time, and this is the second-least-subtle push for a Presidential bid ever (Hillary being the undisputed champion of unsubtlety).

I don't know wtf they are doing with that "long form", they purposely made that look really confusing.
Why didn't they just make it like so

Code:
 23
x 7
___
 21
140
___
161

I mean that's pretty darn similar to the "box" method and I learned that in my Podunk country school 30 years ago.

Code:
 23
x 7
___
 21
140
___
161

Yes that is box method, but no...

I suspect you're wrong in your recollection and in your podunk town 30 years ago you were actually taught to "carry the 2"

Code:
 2
 23
x 7
___
  1

Then you perform (2x7)+2 =16, placing that next to your 1 for 161

this might be more clear:

box:

Code:
 12
x34
------
300
 60
 40
  8
------
408

longform:

Code:
 12
x34
------
 48
360
------
408

I'm not. How I wrote it is exactly how I learned it 30years ago. Of course its how I've always done it in my head as well. But I remember having to "show our work" and how I typed it is exactly how we were forced to write it.

There's no difference between those two methods except the way they are shown in this particular diagram. It's the same method illustrated differently.

hmm. how would you:

123
x456

??

I was taught to just shift the digits over before adding them up. replacing the empty spaces with a zero.
eg:
Code:
 123
x456

this was before calculators or computers in the class room. when writing em out by hand we just started in a column to the left for the 10s, 100s, 1000s spaces. then treated the empty spaces as a zero. seemed to make sense at the time and it appears to calculate correctly.

I learned the written long form method in school - and that's what I'd still use for larger number I suppose (if I didn't have a calculator...)

But for everyday multiplication I use the mental box form method.

That's how I learned it as well, and that is the full show-your-work version of the "long form", which is essentially what the "box form" is doing as well. I'm not seeing anything other than a rebranding here.

yeah, I don't know wtf they are doing in the "long form" version in the graphic above. what with all the arrows and twists and crap. looks to me like they are trying to make the "old" way look difficult in order to convince people that their rebranded "new" way is actually an improvement.

WTF??? LMAO

Damn, I let my federal legislators enforce my little nieces and nephews learn how to multiply like that????

Is there any proof this is a more effective method of education?

This is really odd and it reminds me of conspiracy theorists who use occult numerology of dates, ages, or any kind of associated numbers to explain an event.

I have two children receiving public education in California. I would most prefer they not be used as beta testers for a set of standards that are not vetted anywhere. I personally believe Common Core is the Obamacare of public education. If you think our students have trouble now, wait until CCSS destroys what little remains of their hope at being educated. Common Core is designed to do one thing, and one thing only: create a permanent, servile sub-class of people to serve the ruling elite. There is a reason these "improved" educational standards are not being implemented in private schools, and most of the ruling elite educate their children in such private schools.

I have and will continue to vote for liberty loving conservative Republicans. I will never vote for one who supports this common core. I view it as equally a progressive nightmare as Obamacare.

Is this thread about Jeb Bush or Multiplication? I'm confused.

This thread is about multiplication (Matt's thread title to the contrary notwithstanding).

As usual, Matt could not be bothered to supply any content in his OP (other than a link).

So presence stepped up and gave people something to talk about ...
