I KNOW some of you silver lovers have tried this. What have your results been? I just ordered 2 boxes of half dollars. That comes out to 2000 coins. I am just looking for the silver. My bank has a free coin counter so I can simply dump them and get my money credited back to my account.

I love coin roll hunting. It's all about the numbers to have a shot at finding good silver or antique coins, but when you do, the rush is very fulfilling. For me, it's as much of a hobby as it is about accumulating valuables. The thrill of the hunt is almost as good as actually finding keeper coins. I rarely re-sell my coins for a profit, since I'm looking to bulk up on precious metals as much as possible.

My greatest find to date was a single roll of dimes that had no less than seven silver Roosevelt and Mercury dimes in it. I've also gotten decent results from halves and dimes. Less so for quarters. Pennies are fun if you like coin collecting. Wheat cents and even the odd Indian Head penny are a lot more common than many people would think.

If you browse the web, there are incredible stories out there. Someone on another forum claimed that he got a $10 gold coin stuffed in a roll of quarters! This is probably a one in a five million find, but what a return!

I'm always looking to increase my skills. It would be nice to see discussions of more experiences here on RPF. Coin roll hunting is one of the best kept secrets for getting cheap silver and collectible coins, and it's becoming more popular as silver prices tick up.

I once found a Morgan silver dollar in the register at work (immediately traded a paper dollar for it) and was curious as to who would even think if it as a real dollar since they haven't even been in circulation for years (since 1921). I tried to look up its value on the intenet but found it was a counterfit. Haven't seen real silver coins show up in a long time now.

This isn't quite coin roll hunting, but let me mention that change machines sometimes reject "odd" coins. I've had a couple recent occasions where I caught them filling it up at a local grocery store and coins were left in the tray. I asked the attendant if I could take a look, and he let me. No silver, but several pieces of foreign currency, mostly Canadian.

I think it's conceivable that older silver coins could be rejected from these machines, if their sensors are programmed to kick out coins that don't quite match the shape and weight of standard US currency.

How do you go about doing this?
Where do you order them from?

I've searched through my change before, found some silver, its cool.

I have a collection that goes back to 1896 of assorted silver, gold, and metal coins.

Go to your bank and see if they will order you a box of half dollars, quarters or dimes. Look for the silver. My bank seems to be very cool about it and they have a coin machine in the lobby that is free to use.

yes, I am willing to bet that machines reject silver coins of the same size, they're generally designed to filter size, then weight.

So to save time, I'd dump them right into the machine and collect the rejects.

Otherwise. a silver half dollar is only worth $12-15. How many will you need to go through to make it worth your time?

for those who have done this, what is your average earning per hour, or how many silver coins per 1,000?

From what I have seen so far, about 1 silver piece a box is average. Some people get 10, many get 0. My boxes are coming in on tuesday. I will tell you guys how I do.

cool, thanks, I'd be very curious to know.

About a year ago I went and asked our bank for around 40 or 50 dollars worth of coins (I think that I asked for quarters).
The teller gave me a hard time. She asked me what I planned to do with them.

I'm pretty sure that she recorded my name for some reason.

Off subject, but 'm pretty sure that I'm already on a list - shortly before that I tried to deposit $2,000 into our savings after we sold our car. My wife was in the car with me (a drive through) and we were both asked for our drivers licenses because we were depositing a large sum of money. I got mad and asked for my money back and then drove off.

If you think that's bad: I was in Mexico this summer and eating a restaurant. The bill came back and it was a bit more than I expected and didn't have enough pesos in cash to pay. Luckily there was a money exchange place next door so I went to change €20 I had in my wallet. I had to give ID, an address and a telephone number just to change that! I'm sure the US will be like that soon.

We used to do this back in the 70's. I once found a roll of dimes that were all silver - that was pretty exciting! (I was probably 14)

That was like when I had 6 Carson City Dollars in my register and gave them away, had no idea they sell at $100 a piece.

Has anyone seen those Silver Quarters circulating now? I have run into SOOOO many at work, had NO IDEA they have actual silver content.

Very exciting! The pure silver rolls are still out there, but they are rare. Your chances of finding such wonders are better if you visit a bank that accepts and re-issues customer rolled coins.

When I coin roll hunt, I note that my finds bring more than one coin per roll a little less than half the time. It's almost as if silver coins travel in herds...

Ok guys, I went through 1 box(1000 coins) and I found 6 pieces. Only 1 was 90% though, but it was pretty fun hunting. I will let you know how the next box goes.

3 40% pieces in the next one, so not as hot. The hunt is not really worth the trouble financially, but like I said it was pretty fun. If you had a daughter or son, you could make it a game you do together or something.
