Coin Roll Hunting

About two years ago my dad got an entire roll of 1950's dated quarters from the bank. He gave away about a third of them as change before he realized what he had and switched the rest with his own money.

Found a 1964 dime from change given to me. Cha ching!!!! :D

Lots of silver dimes still floating around of the Roosevelt variety. They aren't as noticeable, unless you manually check the date, or just happen to notice the pure silver rim.

With copper prices up, some people are now beginning to save pennies made before 1983. Is anyone doing this? It's tempting, but I just don't have the storage space to start hording hundreds of rolls of copper pennies.

Geez, they get mad at you for get $50 worth of coins and for depositing $2000? Is this a kids bank or something?

Believe it or not, it's the same bank that I've done business with since grade school over 40 years ago! Our school had some sort of a program where students would bring in a little money (and our bank deposit book) and, somehow, the money got deposited in our account.

I don't know what part is stranger - the idea of taking money to grade school to be deposited in a bank account, or the idea of needing double identification to deposit money into an account that you've had for over 40 years.

What really burned me is the fact that if my wife hadn't been sitting beside me in the car they wouldn't have asked for her identification. It was bad enough that they were asking for mine. Asking for her I.D. put me over the top.

I think that it might actually be a State (Federal?) law that identification is needed for deposits over a certain amount.
You know......don't want drug dealers and terrorists saving their ill gotten money.

Read this thread and though, might as well look through some old coins I have lying around. Basically a box where I put my day to day change, had it for many years. Went through, pulled out some old coins I collected as a kid, set them aside. Out of a around 500 silver coins, nothing pre-1964. Then, I turned focus back onto the collector coins I had accumulated as child. I figured nothing would be valuable, because I have had these since I was six years old. Found a 1926 quarter and some random pennies.

Then, somehow I missed it, sitting in the bottom of the box, a 1987 golden $5 coin. Figured it was some collectors piece, maybe worth $15. I went on Ebay to check it's value. HOLY CRAP! ITS GOLD! A random 1/4 oz gold coin just sitting there! Maturing in value for years. Had I know about this when I was in my early teens I would have surely traded it for some quick cash. Thank you thread, now I'm up ~$400.

Funny I just started investing in gold and silver. this one is a keeper.

That's a great story. Handsome looking coin too. There's more where that came from, if you're willing to put down the cash or put in the time to search for it. Anyone can get silver and perhaps even gold with lots of time or money. Coin roll hunting is the only method I know of that's virtually free.

Just a quick update: I found four 40% Kennedy silver half dollars at a casino several hours away from where I live last week. I hardly ever play at this place, but instead spend my time sifting through coins. Not a lot of machines left there that actually use coins, but there are a few fifty cent and quarter slots. I just cash out a full bucket and then sort for silver.

It took about two hours and several buckets to turn up the halves. Curiously, they all came at once, so it may have been from one role or box that was loaded into a particular machine.

Casinos can be great fun if you like coin roll hunting. It's sad that this is dying as more and more of these places convert to ticket only slot machines and do away with their coins.

This isn't quite coin roll hunting, but let me mention that change machines sometimes reject "odd" coins. I've had a couple recent occasions where I caught them filling it up at a local grocery store and coins were left in the tray. I asked the attendant if I could take a look, and he let me. No silver, but several pieces of foreign currency, mostly Canadian.

I think it's conceivable that older silver coins could be rejected from these machines, if their sensors are programmed to kick out coins that don't quite match the shape and weight of standard US currency.
ditto, and successful
couple of silver quarters and dimes

I've gone through 4 boxes of halves and 1 box of quarters and I have found 24 40% 3 90% halves and 1 silver quarter. I think I will give it a go again. Its pretty fun and once the coins start to stack up it looks pretty cool.

I'd say I get about one silver dime out of every 25 rolls I try. I worked as a cashier for 3 years and probably found a total of 6 silver quarters...they seem much more rare. I haven't tried the halves yet.

Pre 1982s. Some of the 1982s are zinc like the newer pennies. I have nearly 100 pounds of pre82s. I'd don't think I will be doing anymore collecting unless I can find one of those penny sorter machines for cheap. It's very tedious to do by hand for such a small return. And since the gov'ment made it illegal to send the pennies out of the U.S. you can't even find people willing to pay copper spot price on ebay. Not to say that won't change in the future.

Out of 15 rolls of dimes ($150 worth), I found one.

Not worth the time in my opinion unless the odds are better.

...Maybe it's worth it if there's a free coin counter.
