For the record, I don't consider myself a birther. It has just not be sufficiently proven to me that he was born in this country, so I'm on the fence.

But I'd much rather be considered a birther than someone who actually believes that pathetic excuse for a birth certificate is sufficient while knowing he has spent millions to keep from providing the real one.

The law in effect when Obama was born did not even require the one year residency in section (b). Basically Hawaii would issue a birth certificate to almost anybody who said they had a baby.

This explains it all. The last desperate punches from a someone who knows they've lost the fight. It's clear from the election of George Washington, who's parents were British subjects and Thomas Jefferson, a French citizen, how the founding fathers felt about that requirement.

It was clear that prior to the founding of the U.S. everybody was a British subject. Not just George Washington parents, but old George himself. I mean come on. Don't go silly just to win an argument. The founders cared enough about this to put it in the constitution. That's all that matters.

Thank you for the link. From what I am reading there, officials are still required to verify the birth so somebody could not easily make it up. The law is from 1949- prior to Hawaii becoming a state. Wondering if this was even effect in 1959 when Hawaii did become a state?

§338-5 Compulsory registration of births.

Within the time prescribed by the department of health, a certificate of every birth shall be substantially completed and filed with the local agent of the department in the district in which the birth occurred, by the administrator or designated representative of the birthing facility, or physician, or midwife, or other legally authorized person in attendance at the birth; or if not so attended, by one of the parents.

The birth facility shall make available to the department appropriate medical records for the purpose of monitoring compliance with the provisions of this chapter. [L 1949, c 327, §9; RL 1955, §57-8; am L Sp 1959 2d, c 1, §19; HRS §338-5; am L 1988, c 149, §1]

Yup (let's assume for the moment that the figure is correct, though it probably isn't).

I'd do the same thing if I was Obama, for a couple of reasons.

First, the money is meaningless to him- he's got tons, so it's no big deal to spend this pittance to say "FUCK YOU" to the birther nuts. I'd probably do the same.

Second, Obama gains politically by using the birther nuts to show the irrationality of the opposition. He has no desire to get rid of these people. The "birthers" are to the Republican Party what the Storm Front "supporters" were to Ron Paul- unhinged supporters who do more harm than good.
