It's official: the people running our country are totally insane...

With diplomacy having failed miserably to resolve the Russian annexation of Crimea, and soon East Ukraine (and with John Kerry in charge of it, was there ever any doubt), the US is moving to the heavy artillery. First, moments ago, the US DOE announced in a shocking announcement that it would proceed with the first draw down and sale of crude from the US strategic petroleum reserve, the first since June 2011, in what it said was a "test sale to check the operational capabilities of system infrastructure", but is really just a shot across the bow at Putin for whom high commodity prices are orders of magnitude more important than how the Russian stock market performs. And now, as Bloomberg just reported, the US has escalated even further, citing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, who "has claimed that in the case of an escalation of unrest in Crimea, the U.S. Army is ready to back up Ukraine and its allies in Europe with military actions."

Oh bullshit. The US is not taking military action against Russia. It's talk, everyone knows it. Why they even bother I have no idea.

bullies have to always act tough or risk their subordinates following somebody else.

You would expect someone in charge of an army to say the army is ready.

The one Axiom in International Relations study:

No nation with Nukes has ever been invaded.

And it is not so uncommon for bluffs to be called. :(

You really think two superpowers are going to have a shooting war over Crimea?

Russia is keeping it. Nobody in Washington really gives a shit, there will be some false outrage that will pass.

It's Talk.
It's bullshit.

In prison it was Rule #25. (Making Threats)

I thought that was a "Known".

I hope you're right, but I don't trust some of the idiots that drive policy, so the less sabre rattling the better.

This is where people like you go off the rails in grand fashion: you discount the power of words, reducing language to a cheap and incidental thing. There are so many ways in which this can go wrong I would not know where to begin listing them.

It may be that this is all political theater and that Obama and Putin blow each other in private quarters. But what if it is not quite that tightly synched? We have thousands of nuclear warheads. They have them, too, and I would add that since the end of the Soviet era the Russians have not been asleep at the switch. The end of the cold war profited Russia more than the USA by at least two full orders of magnitude. Because of the availability of technologies the Soviets could do nothing but drool after, the Russians have been very busy bees. Their military aircraft are every bit the match of ours, and given the white elephant the F35 is proving to be, a conventional confrontation with a REAL armed force, something with which we have had no experience since 1952 at best, a war with Russia will result either in our resolute defeat or a nuclear exchange.

You may be right - this may be nothing but talk, but talk can make the most unexpected things happen. What if the Russians did something that painted Bammy into a corner such that he would feel he had to respond in order not to look like a wholesale bed-wetter? What if he and his owners misjudge the Russians, calling their bluff and it turns out not to be bluster?

We don't know the truth behind all this, but one thing we do know is that if we end up in a shooting match with Russia in their own backyard, they will defeat us with one hand tied behind their backs. These are not the Soviet stooges. This is modern Russia.

Shit can get out of hand suddenly, unexpectedly, and rapidly when people do not know how to hold their damned tongues, so we'd all better hope you are correct. Unfortunately, my assessment of the salient influences of language is also correct, leaving us with a crapshoot we would not have to address, were certain people more prudent with their big mouths.

So go ahead and cry "bullshit" if it makes you feel better.
