Thanks to a masterfully choreographed roll out, polls show Gov. Rick Perry is the frontrunner for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination after only three weeks as a candidate.

Early frontrunners from campaigns gone by can tell you these things have a way of changing. Debates are among the events that can make them change. With that in mind, Perry and seven other GOP contenders are gearing up for the first debate in which he will take part. It's a two-hour event, starting Wednesday at 7 p.m. Austin time, sponsored by Politico and MSNBC, with the latter showing it on cable.

...

We also look forward to hearing more from Perry on foreign policy, a potentially tricky topic for governors who run for president. To date, we've heard hints of the Perry philosophy but little on specific policy.

Last week, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars national convention in San Antonio, he pitched an aggressive approach properly based on preemptive strikes in response to perceived threats to our homeland. Like much about foreign policy, that's a position easier to espouse than enact. As we've learned the hard way, our nation's intelligence operation is not always what we'd like it to be.

<evil grin!>

...

With that in mind, we note the debate also will include a "lightning round" of questions with "yes" or "no" answers. Politico has been soliciting suggested questions.

...

"Do you think we are in the end times?"

We don't think so. But a candidate who performs poorly at this debate could see his or her candidacy heading there.

:D

Eat a good dinner before the debate Paul and think sharply on your feet!

I am hoping he gets more than softball questions, the other candidates are on the offensive against him, and Paul knocks it out of the park!

I imagine he will prep like crazy, and he will have good help. He won't be impressive to attentive viewers like us, but to people that treat him as a savior? Who knows.

I'm more interested in how Ron performs. I imagine there will be plenty of FEMA questions, he needs to nail that question as he has been doing.

FEMA inefficient. National Guard troops half way across the globe. Subsidizing risky behavior. Push it toward the economy, which is where Perry will hurt imo. He does not understand economics.

Yea, it's going to be really interesting. Perry can't even answer simple questions from reporters or people at gatherings, I have a hard time imagining he'll do well in a presidential debate.

Plus, Romney is sure to be on the offensive seeing how he isn't the "front runner" anymore.
