Can any gun fanatics help me out?

Used Glock 19 is probably going to be the best all round choice. If you don't want to spend that much look for a used S&W Sigma. They can be had for dirt cheap and are often very reliable. The Sigma has the worst trigger ever but cheap comes with a price.
i used to think 9mm was a good idea. but with the extreme cases out there showing an average criminal on pure adrenalin being able to ignore them like mosquito bites, i don't recommend anybody a round less powerful than a .40SW

and having a self-defense gun should ALWAYS be about protecting against the extremes.

There really isn't any proof or much evidence that it really matters which of the major defense calibers you use. A handgun is pretty bad at stopping a determined person regardless. The link you provided didn't mention 9mm and made no case that the outcome of the gun fight would have been any different had 9mm been used. It just pointed out that the .40 S&W performed as advertised and the .223 did not. Neither round stopped the guy and 9mm wouldn't have either.

And since handguns are bad at stopping people it could be argued that the added capacity of most 9mm handguns gives them a distinct advantage over .40 or .45. Plus the fact that it's easier to put shots on a target quickly with 9mm.

40SW is supposed to be stronger than 9mm Parabellum. but if 40SW might not be able to stop a criminal, i definitely wouldnt recommend a round that was less powerful.

as for eaiser to put rounds i target, it depends on the training and the pistol. i had a hard time being accurate with a 9mm Glock, but im plenty accurate with my .45 1911.

Carrying the handgun you can shoot the most accurately fast is the best thing you can do. If that's .45 then carry the .45. Most people shoot 9mm better than .40, .357 or .45. Although .45 does have an advantage in that the guns that are chambered for it tend to be all steel and heavy. Of course that is a disadvantage for CC.

What if the less powerful 9mm has a virtually negligible difference in stopping power but you can shoot much faster and more accurately? Would you recommend it then? That is the case for many people.

Dead on, if all you can do is the Homie, Hollywood, Spray and Pray, I'll put you in your grave with one quick well placed shot from a .22.

Be practiced, be calm, know and be comfortable with the weapon in all positions, and above all be, deliberate, and willing to engage without hesitation, and shoot to kill.

This is what wins gun fights and note it applies with knives bare hands and teeth. Caliber is irrelevant, its what's in your head.

Yup

Best $309 I ever spent:

Mine is my regular carry weapon now. I got the slightly enhanced version with the beavertail grip safety and the adjustable sights. Then I put a crimson trace on it.

You will read some people bashing the Rock Island but not based on any actual experience. Just based on a prejudice against foreign goods or the use of a certain kind of fabrication technique.

It is an excellent value!

CZ

If you're relatively new to firing handguns, I recommend against a Glock, or other lighter weight composite gun. You might find they are a little hard to shoot accurately and have a lot of recoil.

I'd recommend an all-steel gun for your first handgun. They'll be more accurate in shooting.

A good inexpensive all-steel gun is the CZ 75.

I recommend you go to a shooting range and rent a couple of different hand guns to find the style and caliber you like. Remember, you're first handgun should be for self-defense, not to show off.

CZ makes great guns. And the ergonomics of the CZ 75 are unsurpassed.

I'm not much of a revolver guy so can't comment. Nothing wrong with a revolver, just not my cup o tea.

I won't get into the endless argument about 9mm versus .45. The fact is that the vast majority of attacks are stopped by the mere PRESENCE of a gun in your hand. If it goes beyond that it is mostly an issue of mental attitude and shot placement. So get a gun that will be pleasant for you to practice with and carry (oops! I forgot you live in a commie state where you are not allowed to protect yourself against criminals on the street. Sorry). And then learn to use it.

why so you can have everything compared to a Glock 17??

+1

His average comparison

(What ever gun) vs Glock 17
nuthingfancy: Guys the glock wins hands down!

if you going to buy a gun, (hand gun)
get a 9mm, if you get the 40sw (which i did) its going to cost you more for ammo. so when you train, its going to cost you an arm and a leg.
right now you can get about 1k 9mm for 200 dollars. but 40sw, its going for like 320.
what ever gun you buy, you need trigger time, when you first take your gun to the firing range your going to find out its not like the video games where you can shoot bullseye every time. so you need trigger time, or your going to be a gun donor when SHTF

as for which hand gun, guns you buy these day all boil down too...... THEIR ALL FUCKEN ACCURATE and reliable (at least the ones that cost more then 300). so it all boils down to preference and comfort. my first hand gun, i was going to buy a glock but then the dealer showed me the XDm and it felt so much better in my hand. Its kinda big for CCW but hey, my state is one of two states that don't allow CCW.

but your hand could be a smaller then mine, and you might like the glock. get my point? so just go to the gun range and pay their rental fee and just try a whole bunch of guns, after a while just buy that same model.

my next gun purchase is going to be a sig 516, ruger sr9c

as for a rifle, get a ak-47, you can get one for 400 dollars. its cheap and reliable and it only cost like 200 dollars for 1k rounds.

I prefer to think of myself as a "fun ganatic" rather than a gun fanatic.
