Can any gun fanatics help me out?

Best $309 I ever spent:

i've only shot my springy trp (1200$ LOL). are ALL 1911s pretty much the same when it comes to quality or is RIA just the best one for its cost?

Good luck if the gun laws in NY are anything like the ones in NJ. I was actually curious about picking up a starter pistol and going down to the nearest range, but being the jobless student I am I highly doubt I'll be able to go through the hoops. Which ticks me off because that's the entire reason they made it so complicated in the first place.

I'm between jobs at the moment too unfortunately, if all goes as planned though I'll have a decent job starting in January and I'll be able to pick one up.

Seriously if you haven't handled fire arms since you were a kid and know little about them I do not recommend going straight out and buying anything. Go to a range get with some one who knows what they are doing the range staff preferably or take an NRA or other sanctioned safety course, learn how to safely handle, and properly shoot a hand gun first.

Most ranges rent a variety of fire arms in various calibers. See what suits you before putting big bucks down on something you don't like carrying or shooting. I definitely would not buy a hand gun based on the recommendations of an on line forum.

I had planned on doing that, I want to know exactly how to take proper care of it and especially to be safe, I will totally educate myself on any gun I buy before I go through with buying it.

For my first handgun I would probably get a revolver. But if you are dead set on a semi-automatic you have plenty of quality choices.

Glocks are fine, but just be sure to feel it in your hands before you purchase it. If you have smaller hands they aren't very comfortable to shoot.

Oh and welcome to the forums! :)

Welcome to the forum. Since your experience is limited . I would suggest a revolver as well . Once you get it , shoot it often until your comfortable .

The advice to try before you buy is good, and I concur with it. From what I have seen in the Army and later, 1911s are an either or weapon. You are either good with it, or you need to use something else.

The current production Rock Islands are now made in the Philippines. Some historians can appreciate the irony in that. It is true that quality varies widely in 1911s. Reviews on the Rock are generally good, making it a value weapon for a 1911. After changing the grips and mainspring housing, if I had it to do over, I'd get a Springfield WWII model. People like to mess with 1911s about as much as they do with ARs, but I figure John Browning knew WTF he was doing.

A couple of weeks ago, went out with some other guys in the unit with a pistol instructor (retired Army w/ President's 100 tab), and the first exercise was at the close targets - fire one and put the second round through the same hole. Did that - and got the remark "Many people say the GI sights on the .45 are worthless. Doesn't seem to be the case here." There were tricked out Kimbers and such, but it is more the shooter than the weapon - there is no weapon that will make you a better shot than you are. BTW, the 9mm did not do well in knock down power for some of the targets.

I got lucky with a good one, but Armscor has a reputation for making any issues you may have with it right. Mine is accurate and groups well and I hope my next .45 (Springfield WWII GI) shoots well as this one does.

Thanks for all the advice guys :)

You are most welcome . If you need advice about weapons , ammo , food , history etc just ask , somebody here will give you some good advice . You will likely not find a sharper group of people .

lol that's a good thing though, I like that there is a diverse group of people all brought together by one common belief, in this case their love of liberty :D

Used Glock 19 is probably going to be the best all round choice. If you don't want to spend that much look for a used S&W Sigma. They can be had for dirt cheap and are often very reliable. The Sigma has the worst trigger ever but cheap comes with a price.

If you're relatively new to firing handguns, I recommend against a Glock, or other lighter weight composite gun. You might find they are a little hard to shoot accurately and have a lot of recoil.

I'd recommend an all-steel gun for your first handgun. They'll be more accurate in shooting.

A good inexpensive all-steel gun is the CZ 75.

I recommend you go to a shooting range and rent a couple of different hand guns to find the style and caliber you like. Remember, you're first handgun should be for self-defense, not to show off.

True , I have an old all steel .32 auto made in Chino California probably 1990 , thing has no recoil .
