I live in Durham, work in Raleigh and my coworker has been buzzing in my ear about this proposed amendment to the North Carolina constitution which would, from my understanding, end domestic partnerships. This would disqualify health insurance companies from providing joint care, among other tax benefits. This is done in the name of ending same-sex domestic partnerships and further drawing a line in the sand between gays and straights. I am straight myself, but being a liberty lover understand the plight of those who are against this amendment. I myself am against it and will be voting against it come the Primary election. I don't believe the government should be in marriage regulation at all, but this is obviously another act to simply oppress the citizens. Many big corporations have even come out against it, and already predict this will be bad for NC employees. We all know Ron Paul supporters will come out for the polls - so please spread this to your fellow Americans and encourage them to pay attention when voting this primary election.

This is worse than when our state went blue and voted Obama, not that McCain was any better but still. There is a facebook page dedicated to Voting No on the amendment it already has around 40000 members.

Can you post the FB link here. This would be a good backup for Gunny after what he went through this week.

Csturmer, if you want to know more about this amendment I would contact Rep. Glen Bradley. He is known on these boards as Gunnyfreedom.

I also live in Durham, work in Raleigh, and care deeply about this amendment.

However, I'm putting significant effort into helping it pass. Don't assume that all Ron Paul supporters are with you.

This whole thing is already a done deal, though.

First, it's a done deal because if Prop 8 passed in California, this will pass in NC without a sweat.

Secondly, it's a done deal because the vote is being held at the same time as the Republican Primary, meaning massive turnout from the right, but only the most motivated turnout from others.

Third, it will pass because every single amendment like it has passed in every state that has put it to the public, without exception. Public polling might say otherwise occasionally, but the ballot box is unanimous across the nation. Everywhere it comes up, bills like this always pass.

I'm not as positive as you are. All the polls show that 55% do not want it but wanted to make the decision to have a choice on the ballot. I feel it was a bad move by the GOP to put it on the May primary elections, knowing that the Republicans will turn out for sure because Obama will not have a primary. This is an amendment to our NC Constitution. Everyone should have a best opportunity to vote on it, not just Republicans.

1) It was slated for the November general election ballot, but Dems were upset because they feared large anti-Obama turnout. Now that it's moved to the primary, people still complain about timing.

2) Polls are irrelevant. Other states have shown similar indifference or even hostility to such amendments in other states in polls before the ballot....but the amendment passes. The media and opinion-makers have been successful in making people embarrassed to be against gay marriage. They won't even tell the truth to pollsters, especially if it is a live person on the other end of the line. Robo-calls with numbers to press show much higher numbers against gay marriage than when a person calls them. Both methods underestimate the true feelings of voters, as should be clear by the unanimity across state lines against it.

It's over.

I am confused. Are straight couples in NC allowed to form domestic partnerships right now in NC?
