Breaking News: Utah GOP Convention

the mormons that moved into this area are treating our citizens like slave labor. it's sad.

Mormons kind of stick together, just watch Glenn Beck. He tries to let on that he hasn't made up his mind yet, but Romney sure seems to come up a lot on his show.

Wonderful News!
Kudos and thank you to all of you who worked so hard as well.
With the exception of the Mormon vote (which is to be expected) Ron Paul wins a valdated election poll over the "top tier" candidates! Hopefully this is a precursor of even better things to come! Terrific!!!

Thanks to those volunteers & campaigners

70 votes for 5.5%! Wonderful. Hopefully those 70 are inspired and will take to converting Democrats to affiliate Republican, as well as converting the 1042 Mitt Romney voters.

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson is an eloquent firebrand of a Mayor completely opposed to the Iraq War. That might be a good place to seek out an endorsement.

Anderson calls himself an independent but is a registered Democrat. Nonetheless, he is without question the leading activist politician in Utah. Many of his views are interventionist, but Anderson is surprisingly vocal, in a state that gave GW Bush his largest plurality of the 50 states, on prison reform, drug law reform, against the Dare program, against the Iraq War.

Here is the wikipedia commentarey on Rocky Anderson & War in Iraq:

Criticism of Bush administration
Anderson attracted praise and scorn in August 2005 when, after accepting an invitation from the Veterans of Foreign Wars to participate in a visit by President Bush, he sent an e-mail to local advocacy leaders calling for "the biggest demonstration [Utah] has ever seen" to protest Bush's appearance at Veterans of Foreign Wars' National Convention at the Salt Palace.[11][12] Speaking to a rally at Pioneer Park in downtown Salt Lake City, Anderson justified his protest against Bush, asserting that the "nation was lied into a war".[13]

Amidst this and other criticism, Anderson spoke at a protest against the Bush administration and Congress on August 30, 2006. His speech was animated, characterizing the war in Iraq as "illegal and immoral".[14]

Approximately 4,000 people attended the protest, including numerous veterans. Throughout his speech Anderson stated that a true patriot can question government actions while still supporting America's troops, asserting, "Blind faith in bad leaders is not patriotism." After the anti-war rally where Anderson gave his speech, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff led a pro-war rally and responded to Anderson, accusing him of being "disrespectful" and "stupid" for speaking out on a war when a soldier from his city was being buried the same day.[15][16] Meanwhile, left-leaning publications and pundits have called his speech "outstanding",[17] "refreshing",[18] and "orders of magnitude more powerful than any critique of Bush I've seen by an elected political figure".[19]

On March 19th, 2007, during an anti-war rally for the fourth anniversary of the war in Iraq, and afterwards on CNN, Anderson stated that he believes that George Bush should be impeached, saying: "This president, by engaging in such incredible abuses of power, breaches of trust with both the Congress and the American people, and misleading us into this tragic and unbelievable war, the violation of treaties, other international law, our constitution, our own domestic laws, and then his role in heinous human rights abuses; I think all of that together calls for impeachment" [20]. Recently, at another anti-war rally on April 25, 2007, Anderson and other prominent anti-war figures, including the leaker of the Pentagon Papers, Daniel Ellsberg, furthered their calls for impeachment of the President. Their statements came a day after Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives calling for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney. On May 4th, 2007, Mayor Anderson participated with talk show host Sean Hannity in a heated debate in Salt Lake City, Utah.

MITT ROMNEY endorsed Anderson for Mayor in 2003, but the two have diverged in views since then. Here's video of Romney endorsing Anderson for Mayor of SLC in 2003:

Probably Utah's anti-Romney types usually affiliate Democrat, but I bet there's growth to be made appealing to Democrats and Independents as well as a Republicans.

Question To Utah people:

Is Utah a "winner take all" state, in regards to delegates?

I really dont understand the system as well as I should, so this question may not even make sense, or that I should have already known the answer.

I'm going to assume they're voting for Romney on the sole basis that he is a Mormon. There is no other explanation.

It's not that we're going to take Utah, because we're probably not, but that RP did much better than expected.

I am sooooo happy dancing!

I'm confused. This article contends that Paul was a write-in: http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/224903/4/ .
Wow, great catch! This really proves how motivated people are in the real world to see Paul win the nomination. They can't say it's just an internet movement now. Had he been listed he probably would have received some random votes, some votes of people who aren't for him enough to write him in, some votes of people who would have remembered him had they seen his name, etc. I'm counting this as 5.4% highly motivated RP supporters and 5% taken from the other candidates. He probably comes out 3x that of Rudy and McCain. Still probably no chance to take Utah but this bodes very well for other states. And we're just getting started!

5% at a GOP convention is huge. If we can win with these people, we can win with anyone.

Good Morning. First It's great to see so many people are excited about this news. To answer a few things I have seen on this so far. Yes, Romney gets a strong following here for 2 reasons. First off the fact he is Mormon, secondly he did really save our Olympics. To respond to the first we already are starting to work on a plan. The Mormon religion does have many aspects that state to follow the constitution. Also his stance on gitmo, and freedoms is also something that will not play well. Now, as to his job at the Olympics. Romney did a excellent job. That though was more of a business type of thing then political. We really think that given a few months more of hard work we can flip Utah in support of Ron Paul.

The Herald article: as far as I know Ron Paul was on the ballot. NOT a write in candidate. I will work to confirm that shortly. I was not a delegate but was there and have some delegates I can contact. If this does turn out to be more false news we need to get that article retracted. Seams the media is already trying to spin our first big time real victory.

Finally, The thing I learned most working to prepare and then participating at the GOP event is that WE the volunteers from meetup.com and elsewhere can make a difference. Ron Paul need much financial support now, but he also needs this army of support to get his message out to the people. I hope to get pictures and video up this week. Some of the other members of the Utah group are working on that.

I want to thank you guys for going out and doing this stuff. You are an inspiration to other groups. :)

I take it there were a lot of Mormons voting for Romney there?

There shouldn't be. He is a disgrace as a member of our church. If you read any the writings and speaches of our former prophets David O. McKay and Ezra Taft Benson one can quickly see that Ron Paul has more in common with our beliefs than socialist Romney.

If you seriously want to know what Mormons believe about government, then read The Proper Role of Government by our late Prophet Ezra Taft Benson. As a side note, Ezra Taft Benson was U.S. Secretary of Agriculture during the Eisenhower Administration. Here's the the link...

http://www.zionsbest.com/proper_role.html

Here's an excerpt:

I believe that God has endowed men with certain unalienable rights as set forth in the Declaration of Independence and that no legislature and no majority, however great, may morally limit or destroy these; that the sole function of government is to protect life, liberty, and property and anything more than this is usurpation and oppression.

Confirmed: Ron Paul was NOT a write-in as reported by the Herald. his name was on the ballot. We will contact the paper to ask about the error in the report. Thank you for finding it.
