Arizona Convention Recap - Very long

Nine CD delegate slots are known. We won two. CD1 and CD5. I was present at CD3 (my district) and CD5 (my father's district). My state legislative district straddles two CDs. Three of our LD delegates were at the CD1 caucus where we won by a landslide.

They are currently hand counting the ballots for the 19 remaining at large positions. I just got off the phone on a conference call and the results have not been released as are doing a a recount. I was given no indication as to the results. As soon as I have the information I'll let you guys know.

We need to let the people in other states know how we failed so they don't make the same mistakes.

Depending on the results of the at large, it's either a good result or not so good.

It's certainly too early to determine that it was a good result.

I'm getting the general impression that Arizona was a case of the shoe being on the other foot, compared to Maine, where we won. In Maine, Romney was obstructionist, and here, we were, perhaps? And some of the tricks that Romney was using in Maine, we were using in Arizona?

It appears that Ron Paul was not happy about some of the stuff we did at some of the conventions, I don't know if it was Arizona or not.

The other day you couldn't follow our conversation, now you accuse Parocks of being a troll? His Avatar says <1144, as in Romney has LESS than 1144 delegates. While he doesn't need the names, come on...

< Less than sign
> More than sign
= Equal too sign
≠ Not Equal too sign

Actually, Romney <1144 doesn't mean what he has now, Romney <1144 is our goal, to keep him less than 1144. That has been the case since around Super Tuesday, as I saw it. There were discussions about situational voting for Santorum, so that Santorum could win states, and prevent Romney from getting 1144. No clear plan was developed about that, and Santorum soon quit. This whole delegate strategy is based on keeping Romney <1144.

The establishment had all the power and they hosed us. We were polite all day with the exception of one speaker (not Josh Romney) who kept pimping the Romney slate against the rules which prohibited electioneering for anyone running for national delegate slots. We didn't obstruct anything. Arizona was just a case where nobody knew enough about what they were doing on either side.

John, thank you for a great post. Don't worry about the mistakes you may have made. Everyone makes mistakes, especially during intense conventions involving 2000 people. And don't put it all on you. For every 1 Ron Paul supporter that attended the AZ convention, I guarantee there are at least 10 that were too shy to get involved in the delegate process to begin with.

CaptainAmerica, the only one being negative here is you. John was simply talking about his experience at the convention. That's it. He rationally points out many areas where the Paul folks could have been better prepared and organized. He's not declaring that the Ron Paul group did a crappy job or that the convention was a total failure. He's just highlighting weak spots so future conventions don't experience the same flaws. I think in one of your posts, you said the Ron Paul people were 90% efficient. Well, all John is doing is highlighting problems to fix so that in the future, the Ron Paul delegates can be, say, 99% efficient.

As far as delegates, you don't have to name names at all. Nobody here really cares about names. We just want to know how many national delegates from AZ are Paul supporters. The reports have been completely contradictory. People like you make it sound like Ron Paul won something like 15 out of 29. But other sources claim 2 or 3 out of 29. From the reports I have heard/read, I feel that the 2 out of 29 is the more accurate number. Only on RPF have I seen the number 15. So, if you are claiming that the convention went very well for Paul, if you could just explain how many delegates he won and where they are from (i.e. 1 'A' delegate from CD1, 13 'A' at large delegates, etc.) then that would be great.

2 out of 29 my ass! I was there. They announced the results of the CD voting . We had 5 + at least 1 b delegate guaranteed.

Thanks to the OP for the really detailed writeup.

Takeaway message: Centralized planning doesn't work, even in the cause of liberty. We are each responsible for the success of this movement, and there is more we can do, as listed in the write-up. With just a bit more knowledge and a bit more effort, we can achieve even greater success. That is a positive message and should energize us to keep going.

They are invalid. Even the appearance of regularity is gone. Document all the irregulaties, and have all the elected delegates sign it saying this isn't the will of the elected representatives.

It's not just rules at this point. They can't make it look even close to kosher.
