BREAKING NEWS: ronpaul.com Domain Name Battle update

before this all went down, no one knew who was behind the site-
by the end of this- if the panamanians win, they will be outed, and everyone who follows ron paul online will know.
those are the people who will visit such a site.

Oh if it were me, I would want to get rid of it pretty quickly, because I think the site is past its prime. Otherwise I would convert the site into something else. Ron Paul Auto Parts or something.

Ron isn't going to be making many headlines from here forward. I think that if Ron Paul would have negotiated with the owners they could have worked out a fair price for both. But they didn't seem interested in doing so.

Do you want to bet on that?

Is that it tho? Cause I can understand why that number would invoke hostility. On the same token, I think Ron Paul has some really crappy people advising him to turn down getting the domain from the other Ron Paul when the other Ron Paul got tired of the political spam he was getting. $25k was dirt cheap and I feel somewhat insulted personally that the campaign didn't grab this then. Would it have made a difference? Probably not. Will it make a difference now, probably not.

I could feel the same way about the 848k if was something that I thought Ron Paul was really interested in getting. But I don't think it's Ron Paul that cares so much about the domain name. I think it's someone else who wants to profit off Ron Paul's name, but so what right? Could be one of his kids or grand kids who would deserve to have that passed on to them. But in my mind, that doesn't mean they deserve to have the domain name passed on to them since Ron Paul never legitimately controlled the domain AND rejected it in the first place.

Plus, it's not like Ron Paul and those close to him just suddenly started thinking about his legacy being passed on now. So the 848k price was the price given because Ron Paul didn't think it was worth 25k when he could have had it 5 years ago. Inflation is a bitch!

want to buy my 4-wheeler? ok, 800,000.
Oh, why aren't you making a counter offer?
I guess you aren't interest in making an honest deal.

They were at 250 which included the mailing list, etc. Ron could have came back at 75K and went from there. I bet they would have settled at 150K.

DN Capitol should have taken whatever they could get, because if what i'm finding on the net is true-(going by whois info)
the arbitor won't like what he sees.

Possibly so. Truth is they never got a counter offer though.

If you don't understand why-
then my example meant nothing to you.
But for a real life example-
the next time you go to sell someone a vehicle of yours- ask for about $800,000.
in fact, put it in the classifieds with the listing. tell me how many counter offers you get.
No one would take you seriously, or be offended. some people may call you to see if that was a typo.

I wouldn't deal with someone he starts out way to high on a price. they have already lost the sell.
no counter offer.

But again it wasn't that 800 number it was 250, and instead of responding they went right to the UDRP filing. That is where I have a problem with all this. And also the fact that for over a decade Ron Paul didn't seem to care two hoots whether or not he owned ronpaul.com because he had ample opportunity to purchase it for just the cost of registration.

BTW I have sold 800K vehicles. So your example is lost on me. :)

I remember back, years ago- someone did this to kelsey grammer.
I thought those people were douches back then too.

I understand some people are rich.
I guess when I talk about $5 dollars, it means a lot to me.
You probably wouldn't bend over to pick it up.
You could have bought this site for Ron, why didn't you?

It seems that's pretty easily proved or disproved with the WayBack Machine. I dug through it pretty extensively, so I wouldn't hold out much hope with that logic if I were you.

People buying and selling domains for a living are scummy only if you don't truly believe in free markets. I still believe those working for ICANN are far scummier.

Someone here listed some specific dates in one of the threads.

you say they crossed the line, when? I am not convinced the mark "Ron Paul" was owned by Congressman Paul until sometime after Nov. 2009. The domain was transferred FROM the person who DID own the mark "Ron Paul" in Feb. 2008.

The complaint shows he gave speeches and wrote books as early as the 1980s at least. Further the site IMMEDIATELY used HIS persona, so obviously they heard of him

Because Ron Paul is no longer a candidate, he is a business.

I think what Torchbearer said was exactly what happened. In fact, it was in my scenario I typed several posts earlier. The moment they saw 848k they smelled a rat and upon further smell tests, they nailed it. I know I did when I saw that email and everything else that has been uncovered since then has proven it. Cybersquatters....not supporters.
