Boston Globe celebrates sex-changes for children by major hospital on Sunday front page

The surgery does not change a dick to a clit or vice versa. It's all about appearance and functionality, and that's what transsexuals want. They do look and function well enough post op that most who have the surgery are happy with it.

Other than that, there's no point continuing this if you don't accept people having a male/female brain in the first place.

People do have a male or female brain, if you look at the genetic material and structure (such as the hypothalumus and corpus collosum) you'll clearly see that the the brain either is from a male or a female, that can't be changed. Whether they think they have a female or male mid is different an that's a mental disorder that should be treated.

And you talk about functionality after a "sex change". Their new "organs" don't work. A tranny can't get pregnant or get someone pregnant. They can't reproduce. They become unnatural, mutilated beings. You cannot change your gender, simple as that. Men produce sperm, women can get pregnant. Can transexuals do that? No.

It's a mental illness.

Funny, how 'libertarians' love talking about natural rights, natural this, natural that.....everything you said flies in the face of nature. Natural is procreating and protecting our species from dying off. Homosexuality is the 180 direct opposite of the natural human state.

After a lot of thought on the subject over the past few years, that's the exact same conclusion I came too. Much like depression, or whatever other mental illness, the person may have a lot of trouble dealing with how they feel and have trouble finding a solution, but at the end of the day it (homosexuality, getting your sexual organs altered/mutilated) is a mental illness. Treating a mental illness with surgery flies in the face of common sense. They need counseling, love, and likely hormonal and brain chemistry support in the form of lifestyle and nutrition.

Whether you think it makes common sense or not, transgender people have better mental health outcomes when they have surgery and counseling, not just counseling alone.

This is true. The male and female brains work very differently. All the psychological research I've seen confirms this. There have been experiments in which boys were only given "female" toys to play with. They turned the toys into makeshift guns and so forth and played like boys.

You keep missing the point. David Reimer was given treatment to look female, was told he was female, and as a result he felt he was in the wrong body. This is basically how transgender people feel. It's not because they're mentally ill.

I actually didn't say they were mentally ill. I'll trust they feel how they say they feel; I'm not going to second guess that. I don't accept the idea that the best way to deal with that feeling is extreme body modification. I feel like I'm still a teenager, even though I'm in my later 20s. It doesn't mean I'm going to try to go back to high school or even spend vast amounts on money on hair transplants.

They don't function. If they functioned, they could reproduce with them. And why is it so worthwhile to have something that looks like a clitoris but isn't? You can't eat a wax apple; you may as well stick with the pear (or banana). It sounds like an obsession with visual appearance to me.

I don't see how that could be the case. Again, do we categorize men as having "female stature" is their height is closer to the female average than to the male average?

It's possible that someone who thinks his Napoleon would have a "better mental health outcome" in terms of depression and such if everyone else humored him by pretending he was Napoleon. But it still wouldn't be the truth.

Everyone wants to be happy. The fact that these people cannot be happy without mutilating themselves is a psychological problem that needs to be addressed. I have sympathy for people who have this problem, but I don't believe denying reality is the best way to deal with it. If a person has a mental disorder and is having delusions or hallucinations, we don't play along with them and encourage them to pretend that their delusions and hallucinations are real.

Also, "sex change" operations send the message that it is OK to be transgender, and that it is normal. It is not normal. We can sympathize with people who feel this way and encourage them to get help with the problem, but I don't think that we should pretend that something is not very wrong when someone wants a "sex change" operation.

Making them live in their birth sex is denying reality. The difference between this and mental disorders is that this seems to be similar to intersex conditions, and often the same treatment is given, usually to great success. All a therapist will do is help the transgender person find out who they really are, and that is a transgender person.

Also, people aren't going to 'catch' transgenderism if they see someone in society that has had a sex change. It is OK if someone decides to transition. Of course, therapy should always be required first.

I'm trans myself. I know how important therapy is to the whole process. Sometimes, you will hear of people regretting their decision to transition. Closer examination of those people usually reveals that they don't really fit the transgender label. They most likely are mentally ill, be it borderline personality or whatever. Transgender people who are well adjusted after transitioning will act no different than anyone else, and they aren't mentally ill. Their experiences and distress of growing up like they did may cause a mental illness, but that's really a different discussion.

My decision of what to do with my genitalia is different than forcing you to pretend I'm Napoleon. Do you see why? One's my decision and the other is yours.

No one is saying that we are changing the brain. As you say, that is impossible. The whole idea is to change the body by hormones to match the brain.

I've said before that the surgery isn't the best thing in the world. The goal today isn't to get pregnant or to menstruate. That might be possible in the future, but what transsexuals want is to pass and live as close to the appropriate gender as possible, and the surgery may be their best option if desired.

Men tend to be taller than women to, but we don't speak of "male height" versus "female height." And some boys, who consider themselves boys, do play with traditionally female toys.

I do, but the problem is that people like the folks at the Boston Globe actually do want everyone including me to pretend that the boy is a girl. God forbid I don't call him "she." Then I'm insensitive. At least it's not politically incorrect to admit that the crazy cat lady is a crazy cat lady:

I'm not suggesting it is a mental illness where a person cannot function or is a danger to others. But I do think not identifying with your actual sex is a psychological problem, best addressed through psychology.

It obviously is a mental disorder. If you look down and see you have a penis, but think you're a woman, something is obviously wrong with you.

(Hint: the problem isn't the penis)

There is no such thing as 'Gender Identity Disorder.'

What these people have is better described as Genetic Denial Disorder.

If you have two X chromosomes, congratulations! You are a FEMALE.

If you have X & Y chromosomes, congratulations! You are a MALE.

This simple fact of life isn't rocket science, or subject to the anti-intellectual Marxist nonsense they call Critical Theory.

I seriously doubt many actually think they are a woman...they are not delusional, they just WANT to be a woman instead of a man.

From what I've read they think they're a woman who happens to be inside a man's body. Obviously a sign of a mental illness.

Congratulations, you're beginning to understand intersex people who had their sex incorrectly chosen by their parents at birth, and who later feel the need to transition.
