Seems like there is more to this story than what has been reported thusfar.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A black Mississippi man who often dressed in Confederate regalia to support the state flag has died in a one-car accident.

The Highway Patrol says 49-year-old Anthony Hervey was killed Sunday when the 2005 Ford Explorer he was driving left the roadway and overturned on Mississippi Highway 6 in Lafayette County.

A passenger in Hervey's car, Arlene Barnum, tells The Associated Press that Hervey swerved and crashed after another vehicle carrying four or five young black men pulled up alongside them, yelling and looking angry. Barnum said Hervey yelled something back at the other vehicle before losing control and crashing.

"It spun like crazy and we flipped, flipped, flipped. It was awful," she said.

She said she gave that account to a Mississippi state trooper when she was taken to a hospital after the accident.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol did not immediately respond to an Associated Press query asking if officials are investigating Barnum's account.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Johnny Poulos said Monday in a written statement that no other details of the accident will be available until accident reconstruction experts have had a chance to take a look at the evidence.

Barnum said she and Hervey had been returning home Sunday from Birmingham, Alabama, where they attended a Saturday rally to save the Linn Park Confederate Monument. City leaders there recently voted to remove the memorial from the park.

Barnum said they were in her SUV, which was not displaying any Confederate flags or stickers.

She said she had no idea whether they had been followed from Birmingham.

Hervey, of Oxford, has drawn attention over the years for opposing efforts to change the flag. He said he dressed in Rebel soldier garb to honor blacks who served with the Confederacy during the Civil War. He was often seen often wearing the Confederate uniform and waving a Rebel flag on the Oxford square.

In an interview with the Associated Press in 2001 after a new state flag design was defeated, Hervey said Mississippians' support of the flag with a Confederate battle emblem in the corner is akin to "standing up for home."

"This is not racism. This is my heritage," Hervey said.

If it'd been hillbillies in a P/U truck the MSM would be all over this..........

Woman burns NAACP card at rally, injured in crash after allegedly being chased

http://www.examiner.com/article/wom...ly-injured-crash-after-allegedly-being-chased

Arlene Barnum, a Vietnam-era veteran of the U.S. Army and Republican activist who supports the Confederate battle flag, burned her lifetime membership card to the NAACP at a multi-racial unity rally to save the Linn Park Confederate Monument in Birmingham, Alabama, Saturday. After the rally, however, Barnum was injured in an accident when the truck she was in rolled over after reportedly being chased, Save Our South public relations spokesperson Jonathan Barbee told Examiner.com Sunday.

Vehicle Barnum was in after rolling over. According to Barnum, she and another occupant were chased off the road.

The truck was being driven by Anthony Hervey, another speaker at Saturday's rally. According to the McAlester News-Capital, Hervey was killed in the accident, which took place near Oxford, Mississippi. Initially, supporters thought Barnum had been killed as well, but the tough Army veteran posted a video to Facebook ensuring everyone that rumors of her death were quite premature.

Supporters were relieved to hear Barnum survived, but were saddened by Hervey's death. Hervey, Barbee initially told Examiner, was a veteran from Mississippi who is seen displaying the Purple Heart at the rally.

According to the News-Capital, Barnum said Hervey noticed a vehicle speeding up to catch them. The vehicle started to swerve into their passenger side, the report said. Apparently, Hervey sped up, but a silver vehicle continued to pursue them. Barnum reportedly said the entire incident happened quite fast.

"HELP," she said on Facebook as the incident was taking place. "They after us. My vehicle inside down." It is unclear, exactly, who "they" were, and unsubstantiated rumors quickly spread. Later, she tweeted: “Anthony Hervy pinned in… gas leaking.”

1: there should be a hunt for those who caused this man's death and they should be brought up on charges.
2: what kind of retard do you have to be to celebrate a flag whose main goal was to keep you enslaved and how do you honor slaves who were forced to fight to keep their chains? I say those blacks who fought on the side of the south were screwed in the head and in my honest opinion deserve to never have their names uttered.

Thank you for your insight and bringing up a thoughtful rebuttal to my thoughts on the subject.

ps science as well as any psychologist worth a pinch of dirt or more knows that the bell curve theory is BS and that we are a combination of both our genes and our environment.

Anthony Hervey would disagree. This was the speech he gave at the park just before his death.

My friend who died in that accident must have grown up in a more 'privileged' environment than yourself.

"I'm here honor my grandfather because he done what he did so we could do what we doing today" i'm sorry what? his grandfather fought against the country that is doing what we are doing today. and my black ass surely wouldn't be doing what i am doing today had his grandfather got his way.

followed by "I'm go call a spade a spade cause i'm a black redneck" did he even know what that term means?

I made it to the eight minute mark before i just couldn't take it anymore, maybe it got better later but all i heard was illogical emotional based babble. He may have been a great person but i cant debate feelings.

Yesss suh! You'se sho got's him down. Heh-heh. /s

If you would have listened his grand-father fought in Italy. WWII. Not the war of Northern Aggression. Why don't you give another listen? This time not just shrug it off?

“I want the Birmingham Parks and Recreations board to know that they are ultimately responsible for this tragedy,” said Ginger Barbee, an attorney for the group that sponsored the event. “If they had not voted to remove the monument, this young, heroic black man would still be alive. They have caused so much racial division in a great city which has had very few racial issues since the Civil Rights movement. Anthony Hervey gave his life for something he believed in, reaching across racial lines to preserve history and protect our Constitutional rights… Our prayers go out to his family during this time. He will be remembered.”

Never seen the guy or heard of him before

When I saw the details, I thought it was talking about another guy, HK Edgerton. Another black man that dresses in confederate uniform and wave the battle flag.

Aherm.....

A Georgia man is dead after he snatched a Confederate flag off of a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. Rogers Kyaruzi of Dublin, Ga was riding his motorcycle when he approached Jimmy Miller’s three-quarter ton truck displaying a Confederate flag at a traffic light. Kyaruzi snatched the flag and proceeded to flee. Realizing that Kyaruzi stole his flag, Miller chased Kyaruzi down, running him over at an intersection. “The guy was ran over like roadkill. I’ve never seen anything so gruesome in my life. I guess you can’t just get away with stealing”, says Amy Rice, who witness Miller run Kyaruzi over.

The tally is gonna be greater than those poor souls that died in the church that fateful day. I predict.

I think some sort of cultural relativity might be in play here.

It's hard for us to understand life in the South in the mid-1800s from anything other than what we've read in novels or history books.

This has the potential of being a bad analogy, but:

Perhaps you can think the situation similarly to liberals in big cities today. They clamor and clamor for more government because it's all they know. They were born and raised in liberal strongholds. They were fed big-government from the day they were born. Then one day, perhaps they leave, say California. They sell their over-priced house, and move out to rural Texas. When they get to their new life in Texas, they realize taxes are lower and they can buy a house twice the size of their old one at half the price, but they also have less fire stations, less hospitals, less mass transit, less government services in general, etc.. Instantly they perceive something as being 'wrong', and proceed to tell everyone that they're doing things wrong. You gotta raise taxes! Create more services! Basically, it's a culture-shock. Maybe it's not really 'wrong', just 'different'. And of course, most people in Texas tell them to stop trying to turn Texas into California.

So maybe the black man who served in the confederate army wasn't thinking in terms of what is 'right or wrong'. All he knew was his life in the South. Maybe it was a life of slavery, but it was all he knew. It was his way of life, and he wanted to defend it. (as crazy as that sounds for us today)

There's also the theory that black slaves felt that in order to ever receive their freedom from their masters, they would have to prove themselves in battle. It was not totally without precedent. During the American War for Independence, similar offers were made to black slaves by both the British and the revolutionaries.

Supposing the South had won the war, and blacks refused to fight, it very likely would have slowed any progress towards freedom. White folks would have claimed that while they were getting their butts kicked and their homes burned, the black folks were just sitting around on their hands. However, if they had fought, and had, after the war, respected generals such as Robert E. Lee (who favored the idea of enlisting blacks) spoke on their behalf of their deeds during the war and being 'deserving' of freedom, it might have sped things along. *Might* have—as in, it was worth a shot.

This tradition still follows today—military service has always been a way for minorities to find acceptance. (That's not saying it's necessarily an ideal system). Another example would be the Tuskegee Airmen (Red-tails). At the onset of WWII, few people thought that a black man was intellectually capable of flying a fighter plane, but the white airmen in the bomber squadrons quickly changed their opinions on the matter after seeing black airmen performing in battle, protecting bomber squadrons from German fighters with unprecedented efficiency. Also, if you want U.S. citizenship today you can enlist and it becomes much easier (unfortunately today, that means an endless supply of fodder for imperialist wars, so, yeah, *not ideal*)

So no, I don't think blacks were 'screwed in the head' to have wanted to serve in the Confederate military. And I don't think they're 'undeserving' of being mentioned. It may seem crazy to us in today's world, but it was actually quite practical back then.
