From here those both look 100% steel. I've never worked with rivets, but I'm pretty sure they're made on a lathe.

Pretty sure they come in as wire, and are cut and formed in a press. Turning each rivet on a lathe would be time consuming and produce excessive waste material.

w00t!Well,almost everything. If there's a way to weld dissimilar materials(i.e. aluminum and steel)I don't know about it. It would be cool if there was a universal rod and flux(on those occasions you use stick, which is pretty rare in a small shop AFAIK) that could used to weld anything...but then there's the problem of melting points among drastically different materials and whatnot...

I am personally aware of an industrial application where copper and stainless were welded together. Not sure if it was the same process as that discussed at link:
