Collage of a few unedited pics I took of the northern lights during my recent vacation to Alaska. The pictures really don't do it any justice, tbh. Easily the most amazing thing I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.

The sky just isn't the same without the lights, now.

We were in Fairbanks for 4 days a few weeks back for the first time in 20 years and really wanted to catch the lights but we were not lucky. You are right, the photographs just can't quite catch it. I remember the first time I saw them from Fairbanks. I was walking home on a cold winter night and saw a glow in the sky right over my head. I looked at it quite a while wondering if it was the city lights reflecting off of some clouds and then it struck me... It's the Northern lights!! I watched for quite a while as I continued to walk home and as my eyes adjusted to the blackness of space the curtains could be seen doing their dance in the sky. The curtain of light looked like it was 12 feet off of the ground, just out of reach of my hand, but of course we know they are actually hundreds of miles above the earth. What a sight and what an amazing part of our universe!! Thanks for the memories.

That's where I was, Fairbanks. Stayed there for an entire week. That week was pretty perfect in terms of optimal conditions. Perfect weather, an there was a significant CME that caused some spectacular lights during my stay. I think there was only one night when the lights were generally not visible or inactive. Seeing the lights had been something I've had on my bucket list for a while, and after having seen them for the first time, I'm totally addicted. I've always been rather awestruck by certain natural phenomena, but nothing comes close to comparing to the brilliance of the lights. I also find the scientific explanation and cause of them fascinating, too.

There was one night in particular where they were just completely surreal. So big, bright, and directly over head. Everywhere I looked, the lights were filling up the sky above me. It seemed like I could almost reach out and touch them. The way they glimmer and streak and dance, it's almost as if they have a mind of their own. No two lights ever seemed the same either. Each night the lights seemed to take on a different personality, so to speak. One night they would be placid, calm, and serene, and the next night they would be hectic, chaotic, and wild.

I wish I could see them every night.
