Of course people would then stop making new cars because nobody would pay for one except for a handful of status junkies who HAD to own a new model and that would never pay for the design work and new tooling to actually manufacture the new car. So while this makes a pretty good argument for why pirating is not immoral, it also makes a pretty good argument for why IP is useful from an economic perspective.

Somebody would need a car bad enough to make one and they could charge people to touch it before they brought it out into public.

Real artists make music and art because they enjoy it. They make most of their money doing live performances and can certainly charge for those. They can also sell their music however they want if people are willing to buy copies of their recorded music - but a lot of artists find that it is a good plan to give their music away so more people listen and want to attend their shows.

Grateful Dead, probably the most successful band in history, encouraged people to tape their shows and distribute their music for free - they even set out a section at each of their concerts specifically to enable people to get good recordings. They made their money on live shows and merchandising and cleaned up like nobody's business.
