Bernie Sanders: Jesus was a Socialist

Not this stuff again....... I'm pretty sure Jesus would not have allied with the IRS.

Bernie may be right. It isn't necessary to "align with the IRS" to be a socialist. Although I wouldn't guess whether Bernie realizes that or not. If the question is, would Jesus frown on someone who is hoarding food for the next week while sitting by watching someone else go hungry today, I believe the answer would be "yes." And that goes for all basic needs. HOWEVER....if the question is, would Jesus want the government to put a gun to your head to force you to share your food with those who have none, I believe the answer would be a firm "NO."

Actually, the Roman tax system didn't work like that. Tax collectors drew no official salary. They collected the official tax and turned that part in. The rest of their salary was whatever they could charge on top of the tax. So, let's say the tax is $10. A fair thing would be to charge $12, keep the $2. But the unfair thing would be to charge you $200, send in the $10, and keep the other $190. That's why tax collectors were considered the lowest form of life. Jesus was against the way they operated. It's noted over and over in the Gospels.

Zacchaeus (Luke 20) was a short man who was also a tax collector. He climbed a tree to get a view of Jesus. Jesus stopped him and said, "Zacchaeus, come down. I'm going to your house." Zacchaeus was converted and vowed to pay half his wealth to the poor and repay four times above what he had taken in taxes.

You need to do some additional Jesus homework, Bernie.

Socialists are statists.

It's IS, not WAS.

And the only reason people say things like this is because they don't believe in Him. If you believed in Him you would know He is most definitely a Monarchist of the highest order.

It is human nature to imagine Jesus as championing whatever things you hold the most dear. Socialists do it, homosexuals do it, conservatives do it, anarchists do it, hippies do it, etc. etc. etc.

What people rarely do is actually read the Bible and exegete it.

As funny as that may be, images of Jesus offend Biblical Christians. I'm not saying you can't be offensive...offend away. But I'm just letting you know.

Edit: Also, that image looks like a White European. But Jesus was an olive skinned Jew. There's another example of how people imagine Jesus in their own image.

You know, some people who frequent this website might actually work for the tax department.

Some of these people might be people who have been here a long time.

Obviously, the IRS has so many employees, I'm sure everyone has a neighbor that works for them.

You do realize Ron Paul thinks the IRS should be abolished, right?

There will always be people who collect taxes. Just like any business, someone has to handle the revenue.

Even if the income tax was abolished you'd still need a tax collection department.

Even at the state level where most taxes are collected and set by cities and counties "in theory", it's the state agency that collects the taxes and then redistributes the funds to the various localities. It's simply more efficient that way, especially now that everything is electronic.

At least that's how I heard it works from this programmer friend of mine who works for the tax department.

Well since you put it that way, I guess we really do need the IRS. Who else is going to seize and sell your one and only home, causing you to be homeless, because your tax bill is higher than your cash in hand?
