Rep. Michele Bachmann will not be joining Texas Gov. Rick Perry among failed presidential candidates willing to back former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's campaign.

The Minnesota Republican put out a statement to South Carolina press on Thursday morning, moments before Perry announced he was leaving the race. Ben Szobody of the Greenville News picked it up in full and highlighted the most important parts (emphasis ours).

For me, these past weeks have been filled with much prayer and personal reflection - which has provided some clarity. Ultimately, I recognize that endorsing a candidate is the responsible thing to do.
But it is far more responsible to ensure that candidate is one I can support with a strong conviction knowing, without any doubt, that they protect our values and have the ability to restore our nation's greatness. With some doubt still present, I am not yet prepared to offer my endorsement, but look forward to doing so in the coming weeks.

However, through this exhaustive process of consideration, it was strikingly obvious that one candidate could not be less acceptable to be our Party's nominee. He lacks the poise, experience and moral fiber to represent our principles and values. That candidate is Newt Gingrich. In sum, our nation is in desperate need of a proven and moral leader who can point us back in the right direction - not a desperately flawed candidate like Newt Gingrich who has only proven he cannot lead.

Bachmann's coattails are about the same as Perry's: limited. But the fact that the two cannot coalesce around a Romney alternative seems to underscore just how fortunate Romney has been with his field of competition.

UPDATE: Bachmann for President Communications Director Alice Stewart issued the following statement after reports surfaced that she refused to endorse Gingrich:

"The Bachmann for President campaign has not issued an official statement regarding an endorsement of any current candidate in the GOP race ahead of the South Carolina primary. Any information found to the contrary is inaccurate."

The Huffington Post reached out to the Greenville News for a copy of the Bachmann statement that they posted earlier in the morning. They replied with the report found here.

I saw a video of her absolutely praising Ron Paul non stop on youtube awhile back. Acted like they were good friends....and I've heard tale they campaigned for each other abit. Couldn't tell that by the way they went at each other in that one debate however.....or from some of her comments as of late. Wouldn't look for her support at this point but who knows.

LOL well.....a lot has changed since then hasn't it?

Id almost guarantee she'll endorse Santorum ,people in those positions of the spotlight usually dont want to take any pressure for endorsing a non mainstream candidate ,but if she proves me wrong ill say she might have some hope yet to being a sane person

Santorum still would have to prove himself to be something other than a flash in the pan. Endorsing Santorum would be foolish if he were to drop out a week later due to lack of campaign funds.

Idc if Bachmann does endorse Ron. She's shown what kind of person she is. She needs to be voted out of office.

Bachmann will endorse Santorum or no one. No way she will endorse Newt-Romney or Ron Paul.

She will not be able to maintain her office without supporting Ron. I think she will now begin her fade into obscurity.

As if you still mattered, Bachmann, After the way your campaign ended, your endorsement would actually hurt Gingrich more.

Gingrich has huge personal issues that people should consider when choosing President, especially if the party supposedly stands for strong family values. Past behavior should be taken into consideration. Bachmann is right on to point out that there is no way she can support him.

A strongly-worded ANTI-endorsement for Newt! Love it! The other Republicans may have forgotten, but Bachmann has reminded them why Gingrich is unelectable.

Didn't her super-PAC go to Mitt? I would think she is all in for a job in Mitten's administration. After all, she sunk her re-elction bid to congress during the defection of Sorenson to Ron's campaign by going completely off the deep end. We will make sure she doesn't get re-elected and she knows it.

Ron Paul doesn't need Bachmann's endorsement. She pretended to be his friend and then did her best to trash him in the debates. With friends like that, who needs enemies? As far as I'm concerned, she can keep her filthy, slimy endorsement off our man.
