Audio update - Rand Paul on The Michael Medved Show 1/19/12

thanks. on a commercial now, but more of Rand after break.

Good thing most Ron Paul supporters couldn't care less who Rand supports.

Thank you, I would be sorely disappointed if RP supporters vote for any of the other candidates who have adopted small government rhetoric but are just more of the same

I think Rand gets way too much credit for simply being Ron's son. He is much more willing to compromise and is not nearly as interested in maximizing liberty. I like his voice against things like SOPA and the NDAA, but when it comes to bucking the establishment he falls into line far too often (sanctions on Iran, would support federal gay marriage ban).

I really hope someone else takes up Ron Paul's mantle.

He has said it repeatedly. He has a future to think about.

This is why we cannot spare any resource in 2012 to elect Ron. As good as Rand is, he is no Ron. Ron Paul never compromised even when he *did* have a future to think about. Ron was never shy about telling it to the people in the most straight terms possible. Ron convinced the people with open minds and gave them the passion to spread the message. The message of freedom is one that requires honest self-examination and not one that relies on appealing to the baser instincts. Because of this, we have grown into a permanent movement, not a passing cult of personality.

Sorry Rand, I still like most of what you do, but you've got a long way to before you catch up to Ron. My candidate is Ron Paul, no matter who wins the nomination.

Rand is doing everything right that Ron does wrong (in terms of being political to win over votes in the future). 95% of the Paul base will back Rand in 2016 should Obama be re-elected no matter how much he builds bridges with liberty-hated figureheads. We need them to win an election.

McCain and Rand are friends?

Rand has worked with Graham before as well. He's keeping it friendly which makes sense. Ron is friends with his biggest rivals in Congress. He's friends with Mitt.

When Medved mentioned Kelly Ayotte though, you could tell that Rand isn't very friendly with her. Understandable.

Medved is talking about how Rand would be able to get broader support in his run for president than Ron is now.

Of course you knew that was coming.

I appreciate Rand's approach of gradually pulling his colleages toward us, but he's only effective as a counterpoint to an openly anti-establishment politician who truly educates people and changes hearts and minds. Rand also plays with fire, and he runs the risk of corrupting himself if he lets his guard down and allows himself be influenced by his colleagues, rather than exclusively spreading his own influence.

There will soon come a day when Ron will retire, and I too hope we find a suitable torchbearer that will carry on his tradition of speaking the raw truth to power. Justin Amash comes closest among those already in the US Congress, but he's still in his first term. I think we're likely to turn out a small army of fledgling Ron Paul's as our younger generation grows old enough to be taken seriously as candidates, but it's precisely Ron's age and life experience (veteran, doctor, 12-term one-of-a-kind Congressman who speaks Cassandra truths) that make him so unique...which is why it's going to be very difficult to fully unite behind another standard-bearer anytime soon. I wouldn't be surprised if Rand adopts increasingly libertarian rhetoric as it becomes safer politically, but it's definitely not something we can count on.

potential RP successors:

Justin Amash (MI)
Tom Davis (SC State Senator)
Thomas Massie (sp?) (KY)

and I also believe there might be dozens of future RPs in politics, and at least 100 highly influential activists from all walks of life (Tom Woods, Peter Schiff level of influence).
