Audio update - Jim DeMint says GOP needs to embrace Ron Paul and his ideas more

He praised Ron on Mike Gallagher show too. What the hell is going on?

Well, he won't be able to say with a straight face that Santorum, Gingrich, or Romney stand for limited, constitution-based government.

"One of the things that's hurt the so-called conservative alternative is saying negative things about Ron Paul," DeMint told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham. "I'd like to see a Republican party that embraces a lot of the libertarian ideas."

“I’m still not going to endorse, Mark, because Republicans are yet united and I want to focus on the Senate,” he said. “I think whoever gets elected as a Republican, I want to help deliver a conservative Senate, otherwise it doesn’t matter who is in the White House.”

Later in the program, DeMint predicted a Romney win in his state.

I think that incumbent Republicans will start to realize that unless they are nice to Ron Paul, they risk losing 10% of their voting base. So I question whether DeMint's comments are genuine, but it does show that we are becoming a force within the party.

very few in politics are genuine. What really matters is that we tip their hand just enough so that they vote the way we want.

Haven't we always said we wanted his endorsement?

I think in a way, he has already endorsed Paul. His praise speaks volumes, especially considering that he has done it twice in one day and on two different national radio shows.

yeah, I think this about as close to an endorsement of Ron Paul that we can get. I don't think he will make an official endorsement, but this kind of press from him isn't bad either. My Dad tipped me off to what DeMint was saying about Ron Paul.

What good is a conservative senate when you have a liberal president? Dude needs to grow a pair and endorse the only serious conservative in this race.

Yes he does. There are many others like him.

Yup. It doesn't mean they agree with us. It just means they're scared. But I'll take that. After all, isn't fear of the TRUTH the beginning of knowledge?

It's more fear then anything else, that Ron's gonna go 3rd party. You'll start seeing more of these backhanded compliments from mainline republicans.

DeMint's another fake conservative who voted for TARP, Patriot Act and all of Bushes spending. Not 'genuine' at all in my book.

I think DeMint likes Ron, loves his budget, has qualms about his foreign policy and wishes he'd be more circumspect in how he discusses social issues. I think they are allies. DeMint carried Ron's audit bill in the Senate when Sanders effectively dropped the ball, if you recall, and he and Rand do a lot together. I think he is VERY supportive of what he considers a fall back for us of supporting Rand, who overlaps his orbit. I don't know if he would endorse Ron, but I genuinely consider him friendly to us in most things. He is not a neocon, he is a national security conservative. He understands that the debt is a huge risk to our national security. If he and Ron TALK about how to protect the country, I think they would make a lot of headway.

Hmmm. I thought DeMint voted against TARP.

EDIT: He did vote against TARP, along with Pence and Sessions:
